Objective TO INCREASE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND OF THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DETERIORIATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS, AND TO HELP PROVIDE A SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION. DEVELOPMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES TO INVESTIGATE THE STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIOUS LIMESTONES WHICH AFFECT THEIR SENSITIVITY TO ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION:- THE METHODS INCLUDE:- I) MEASUREMENT BY BASIC RESONANCE FREQUENCY UNDER LOADING II) MEASUREMENT BY VARIATIONS IN WEIGHT III) DETERMINATION OF DISTRIBUTION OF PORE SIZES AT DIFFERENT DEPTHS IV) MEASUREMENT OF SURFACE HARDNESS V) ANALYSIS OF RUN-OFF SOLUTIONS (PH-ETC.). ACCELERATED CHAMBER TESTS WHICH REPRODUCE REAL POLLUTION/WEATHER/CLIMATIC CONDITIONS WILL BE UTILIZED, AND A RANGE OF LIMESTONES EXAMINED.
