Objective
TO ASSESS THE INFLUENCE OF CLOUDS ON CLIMATE.
THEORITICAL AND MODELLING STUDIES OF VARIOUS NUMERICAL PARAMETERIZATION SCHEMES FOR THE GENERATION, MAINTENANCE, AND DISSIPATION OF CLOUD FIELDS, IN GCMS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT LMD IN FRANCE TO SIMULATE THE DYNAMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF A CIRRUS CLOUD LAYER, WITH VERY DETAILED CONSIDERATION OF MICROPHYSICAL PROCESSES AND THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH THE CLOUD ENVIRONMENT.
IN FRANCE, WE WILL CARRY OUT STUDIES OF THE EFFICIENCY AND ACCURACY OF VARIOUS ALGORITHMS FOR THE DETECTION OF CIRRUS CLOUDS, USING BOTH METEOSAT AND NOAA POLAR ORBITER DATA IN ISCCP FORMAT AS WELL AS AT FULL SPATIAL RESOLUTION, AND SAGE DATA. RESULTS WILL BE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF GROUPS IN THE FRG.
A LONG TERM SERIES OF OBSERVATIONS WILL BE STARTED IN 1987/1988 USING THE GROUND-BASED LIDAR INSTALLED AT MAGNY-LES-HAMEAUX, FRANCE.
IN ADDITION TO VARIOUS GERMAN INSTRUMENTS (LIDAR, RADAR) OPERATING FROM PERMANENT INSTALLATIONS AND TEMPORARY LOCATIONS NEAR AND IN THE EXPERIMENT AREA, IT IS PLANNED TO TRANSPORT THE LIDAR NORMALLY INSTALLED AT MAGNY-LES-HAMEAUX (FRANCE) TO AN APPROPRIATE SITE IN THE EXPERIMENT AREA DURING THE SECOND FIELD PHASE (SPRING 89). INASMUCH AS THIS OPERATION IS A COSTLY ONE, AND ALSO CONSTITUTES AN INTERRUPTION IN THE SERIES OF MEASUREMENTS AT MAGNY, IT WILL BE CARRIED OUT ONLY IF THE EXPERIENCE OF THE FIRST FIELD PHASE (FALL 87) CONFIRMS THAT THE RESEARCH AIRCRAFT CAN IN PRACTICE MAKE OVERFLIGHTS IN THE VICINITY OF THE GROUND LIDARS. THESE GROUND-BASED LIDARS ARE TO BE USED FOR DETERMINING CLOUD MORPHOLOGY, ALTITUDE, AND GEOMETRIC THICKNESS.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
