Cel TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF CIRRUS CLOUDS ON THE RADIATION BALANCE OF THE EARTH. THEORETICAL AND MODELLING STUDIES OF VARIOUS NUMERICAL PARAMETERIZATION SCHEMES FOR THE GENERATION, MAINTENANCE, AND DISSIPATION OF CLOUD FIELDS, IN GCMS WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THE FRG TO SIMULATE THE DYNAMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF A CIRRUS CLOUD LAYER, WITH VERY DETAILED CONSIDERATION OF MICROPHYSICAL PROCESSES AND THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH THE CLOUD ENVIRONMENT. THE FIELD EXPERIMENTS WILL CONSIST OF COORDINATED CAMPAIGNS OF MEASUREMENTS INVOLVING INSTRUMENTED RESEARCH AIRCRAFT AS WELL AS GROUND-BASED EQUIPMENT (LIDAR, RADAR) FROM THE PARTICIPATING RESEARCH GROUPS. PARTICULAR EFFORTS WILL BE MADE IN THE ANALYSIS OF METEOSAT AND NOAA POLAR ORBITER DATA DURING THE PERIODS OF THE FIELD EXPERIMENTS. IN SOME CASES LANDSAT AND SPOT DATA WILL BE STUDIED TOO. A PREPARATORY FIELD PHASE IS PLANNED FOR A PERIOD OF 2 WEEKS IN AUTUMN (SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER) 1987, TO INVOLVE EQUIPMENT FROM THE PARTICIPATING INSTITUTIONS OF THE FRG AND THE UK. THE MAJOR FIELD PHASE IS TO TAKE PLACE IN SPRING 1989, WITH AIRCRAFT AND OTHER EQUIPMENT. A MAJOR COMPONENT OF THE PROPOSED EXPERIMENT IS THE AIRBORNE VERSION OF THE CONICAL SCANNING RADIOMETER (AVCSR), JOINTLY DEVELOPED BY FRANCE AND THE FRG, WHICH IS TO FLY ABOVE THE CIRRUS LAYERS, ON THE FALCON E OF THE DFVLR (OBERPFAFFENHOFEN), TOGETHER WITH OTHER INSTRUMENTS FOR RADIOMETRIC AND IN SITU MICROPHYSICAL OBSERVATIONS. THE AVCSR WILL PROVIDE MEASUREMENTS OF RADIATION REFLECTED, TRANSMITTED AND EMITTED BY THE CIRRUS LAYERS, IN VARIOUS SPECTRAL BANDS. ADDITIONAL INSTRUMENTS FOR MICROPHYSICAL DATA, RADIOMETERS, AND LIDAR WILL BE FLOWN BELOW THE CIRRUS LAYERS, ON THE DORNIER 128 (TU/BRAUNSCHWEIG) AND THE DORNIER 228 (DFVLR). ALL AIRCRAFT WILL MEASURE TEMPERATURE AND WATER VAPOR PROFILES, EITHER DIRECTLY OR WITH DROPSONDES. IN ADDITION TO VARIOUS GERMAN INSTRUMENTS (LIDAR, RADAR) OPERATING FROM PERMANENT INSTALLATIONS AND TEMPORARY LOCATIONS NEAR AND IN THE EXPERIMENT AREA, IT IS PLANNED TO TRANSPORT THE LIDAR NORMALLY INSTALLED AT MAGNY-LES-HAMEAUX (FRANCE) TO AN APPROPRIATE SITE IN THE EXPERIMENT AREA DURING THE SECOND FIELD PHASE (SPRING 89).
