Objective THE PROPOSED STUDY IS AIMED AT GAINING INSIGHT INTO THE EXACT MECHANISMS OF THE DETERIORATION BY APPLYING SURFACE-, MICRO-AND TRACE-ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES TO CHARACTERIZE THE SURFACE OF EXPOSED BUILDING MATERIAL, BY DETERMINING THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF INTERMEDIATELY FORMED COMPOUNDS AND BY DETAILED INVESTIGATIONS OF THE LOCAL POLLUTION IN THE ATMOSPHERE, IN PRECIPITATION AND IN RUN-OFF WATER FROM THE STUDIED BUILDINGS. SOPHISTICATED SURFACE- AND MICRO-ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES LIKE ELECTRON PROBE X-RAY MICROANALYSIS, LASER MICROPROBE MASS ANALYSIS, LASER MICROPROBE MASS ANALYSIS AND SECONDARY ION MASS SPECTROMETRY, AND MULTI-COMPONENT BULK ANALYSIS METHODS: X-RAY FLUORESCENCE, NEUTRON VOLTAMETRY, ION CHROMATOGRAPHY AND SPARK SOURCE MASS SPECTROMETRY WILL BE APPLIED. SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE INFLUENCE OF THE MICROCLIMATE: THE EXTENT AND THE MECHANISMS OF THE DAMAGE WILL BE COMPARED SYSTEMATICALLY FOR SITES IN THE DIRECTION OF THE PREDOMINANT WIND AND THE REVERSE SIDE, FOR SITES DIRECTLY EXPOSED TO ACID RAIN OR SHIELDED FROM IT, FOR SITES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE BUILDING EXPOSED TO SIMILAR GASEOUS POLLUTION BUT SUBJECT TO DIFFERENT CLIMATIC INFLUENCES.
