ANALYSIS OF DIRECT AND INDIRECT EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTANTS ON PHYSIOLOGY OF TREES OF FOREST

Objective

INVESTIGATION OF MORPHOLOGICAL DAMAGE TO ORGANS AND ORGANELLES IN VITAL PARTS OF TREES (LEAVES, ROOTS, STEM) AND OF INHIBITION OF PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES BY EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL CONCENTRATION OF POLLUTANTS UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS.

IN THIS RESEARCH PROJECT THE DAMAGE TO ORGANS AND THE INHIBITION OF PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN TREES IS INVESTIGATED UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS. PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL PARAMETERS ARE STUDIED IN DUE FREQUENCY. THAT MEANS IN CORRESPONDANCE WITH THE FLUCTUATIONS AND CHANGES IN THE QUALITY OF THE AIR AND THE SOIL. THE OBSERVED PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL PARAMETERS WILL BE RELATED TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS BY MEANS OF TIME SERIES ANALYSES.

AS MANY NATURAL ENVIRONMENTAL FACTOR LIKE TEMPERATURE AND LIGHT INTENSITY, WATER SUPPLY ALSO INFLUENCE THE PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN A TREE, AN EXPERIMENTAL COMPARISON OF A "DIRTY" AND A "CLEAN" ENVIRONMENT UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS WILL OFFER A MUCH HIGHER CHANCE FOR DETECTING SIGNIFICANTLY INFLUENCED PARAMETERS. A COMPARISON OF A DIRTY AND A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT WILL BE REALISED BY CONDITIONING THE AIR AROUND A COUPLE OF TREES.
A CONSTRUCTION FOR THIS FIELD EXPERIMENT WILL BE DEVELOPED.

THIS PROPOSAL IS THE PHYSIOLOGICAL/MORPHOLOGICAL PART OF AN INTEGRAL FOREST-ECOSYSTEM PROJECT IN THE NETHERLANDS, IN WHICH THE FLUXES OF AIR POLLUTANTS THROUGH A FOREST ARE INVESTIGATED. THIS BALLANCE OF POLLUTANTS IS ESSENTIAL FOR INTERPRETATION OF THE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL DATA OF THE TREES.
