CONDITIONING OF READILY WATER SOLUBLE SPECIAL WASTE FOR SURFACE DISPOSAL

Ziel

SELECTION OF A LICENSABLE PROCESS AND A CORRESPONDING PRODUCT FOR THE CONDITIONING OF WATER SOLUBLE WASTE.

NUKEM HAS DEVELOPED THE DESIGN BASIS DATA FOR TWO PROCESS ALTERNATIVES AFTER THE PRINCIPLE OF SOLIDIFICATION WITH CEMENT, SEALING AND SPECIAL DEPOSITING TECHNIQUES WHICH LOOK SO PROMISING THAT IN A FURTHER R&D PROGRAM THEY WILL BE TESTED IN A PILOT PLANT. AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF THIS PROGRAM THE CONTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF A PROTOTYPE PLANT CAN BE CONSIDERED.

TWO PROMISING CONCEPTS CAN AT PRESENT BE RECOMMENDED:

- SANDWICH DUMPING TECHNIQUE WITH THE STAGES: SEALING OF THE SOIL WITH BITUMEN; BUILDING-UP A DIFFUSION BARRIER SYSTEM IN SUCH A MANNER THAT DURING THE HOMOGENEOUS CEMENTATION OF THE SALT A CONCENTRATION GRADIENT IS SET UP AND THE MARGINAL ZONES CONSIST OF SALT-FREE CEMENT WITH A LOW WATER: CEMENT RATIO; SEALING OF THE SURFACE AFTER ONE OR TWO DAYS' DUMPING; REPETITION OF THIS PROCEDURE SO AS TO FINALLY OBTAIN A DUMP PILED UP IN SIMILAR LAYERS.

- HETEROGENEOUS CONDITIONING, I.E. PRODUCTION OF A MULTIBARRIER SYSTEM IN WHICH THE SALT TO BE CONDITIONED IS COMPLETELY ISOLATED FROM THE SALT-FREE CEMENT MATRIX WHICH DETERMINES THE EXTERIOR PROPERTIES OF THE DUMP. IN THIS PROCESS, SPHERICAL SALT/CEMENT BODIES WITH A SALT CONTENT > 65 WEIGHT PER CENT ARE SEALED WITH BITUMEN AND SUBSEQUENTLY EMBEDDED ON-SITE IN A SALT-FREE CEMENT MATRIX, SO THAT A FINAL PRODUCT WITH 40 WEIGHT PER CENT SALT IS OBTAINED.

ON THE BASIS OF THE PROMISING RESULTS OF THE LABORATORY WORK IT IS PROPOSED TO CONTINUE THE DEVELOPMENT IN TWO PHASES. IN THE FIRST, PILOT-SCALE PHASE THE MAIN OBJECTIVES ARE:

- TO ESTABLISH WITHIN THE SCOPE OF A QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM A LICENSABLE PROCESS AND A CORRESPONDING PRODUCT, WHERE QUALITY ASSURANCE IS TO BE UNDERSTOOD AS AN EXPERIMENTAL PROOF OF THE PROCESS AS WELL AS A PERFORMANCE DEMONSTRATION OF THE PLANT,

- TO DEMONSTRATE THE APPLICATION OF THE SERVICE PROVEN PROCESS TO FURTHER WATER-SOLUBLE TYPES OF WASTE, WHICH HAVE TO BE DISPOSED OF UNDER SIMILAR CONDITIONS.
