BIOLOGICAL IMPACT OF ACIDIFICATION ON NON-OLIGOTROPHIC FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS

Objetivo

ASSESSMENT OF THE EFFECTS OF ACID DEPOSITION ON FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS.

THE PROJECT IS SUBDIVIDED IN TWO PARTS:

- QUANTITATIVE APPROACH TO THE IMPACT OF ACIDIFICATION ON THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF SOME TYPICAL NON-OLIGOTROPHIC SURFACE WATERS OF THE CAMPINE REGION OF ANTWERP AND LIMBURG AND IN THE BOG AREA OF THE ARDENNES MOUNTAINS, WHICH ARE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO ACIDIFICATION DUE TO THE LOW BUFFERING-CAPACITY OF THE GROUNDLAYERS. COMPARISONS WITH DATA FROM SURFACE WATERS OF BOG-AREAS IN N. ITALY AND E. ENGLAND WILL BE MADE.

- ASSESSMENT OF EFFECTS OF ACID WATERS ON THE PHYSIOLOGY OF FRESHWATER ORGANISMS. THIS WILL INCLUDE THE EFFECTS OF LOW PH ON THE NA AND CL REGULATION IN FISHES AND THE EFFECTS OF SYNERGISM/ANTAGONISM OF MIXED ION SYSTEMS (AL, MN, CA, H+, NH+4) ON THE NA AND CL REGULATION.

ADDITIONALLY THE ROLE OF "NATURAL" ACIDIFICATION MOSTLY BY BOG-MOSSES (SPHAGNUM SPECIES), COMPARED TO "MAN-MADE" ACIDIFICATION IN NON-OLIGOTROPHIC FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS WILL BE ASSESSED.
