DETOXIFICATION OF CHEMICAL WASTES

Objectif

TO DEVELOP A METHOD AND THE NECESSARY REACTOR TECHNOLOGY FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL DETOXIFICATION OF PERSISTENT TOXIC CHEMICAL WASTE SOLUTIONS.

THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROPOSED IS TO DEVELOP THE NECESSARY ELECTROCHEMICAL REACTOR TECHNOLOGY TO USE THE ABOVE METHOD FOR DETOXIFICATION OF PERSISTENT TOXIC CHEMICAL WASTE SOLUTIONS. ON THE BASIS OF RESULTS OF SEMI-TECHNICAL EXPERIMENTS WITH INDUSTRIAL WASTE SOLUTIONS IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO EVALUATE THE METHOD TECHNICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY AND TO TRANSFER THE KNOWLEDGE TO INDUSTRY(IES) WORKING IN THE FIELD OF "CLEAN TECHNOLOGY". A GREAT ADVANTAGE OF THE METHOD UNDER CONSIDERATION, AS COMPARED TO EXISTING TECHNIQUES (INCINERATION, DISPOSAL), IS THE EXPECTED SMALL ENERGY DEMAND AND THE POSSIBILITY FOR FURTHER BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF THE WASTE SOLUTIONS IN SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS. MOREOVER, BECAUSE LARGE SPECIFIC SURFACE AREA ELECTRODES ARE USED, THE CONCENTRATION OF THE TOXIC COMPOUNDS CAN BE REDUCED TO A VERY LOW LEVEL. ANOTHER ADVANTAGE OF ELECTROCHEMICAL DETOXIFICATION OVER OTHER CHEMICAL TREATMENT METHODS IS THAT, IN MOST CASES, NO ADDITIONAL CHEMICALS ARE NEEDED.

1. LABORATORY RESEARCH

- TO ESTABLISH THE MASS TRANSFER CONDITIONS OF THE FIBRE ELECTRODES,
- THE ANODIC STABILITY OF THE FIBRE MATERIAL WILL BE INVESTIGATED IF IT WILL HAVE TO BE USED AS ANODE,
- SUITABLE SEPARATOR MATERIALS,
- THE EFFECT OF OTHER OPERATIONAL PARAMETERS WILL BE INVESTIGATED, IF NECESSARY.

2. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A SEMI-TECHNICAL REACTOR

ON THE BASIS OF RESULTS OBTAINED IN 1 A SEMI-TECHNICAL REACTOR WILL BE BUILT.

3. TESTING OF THE SEMI-TECHNICAL REACTOR

IN ORDER TO VERIFY UPSCALING CALCULATIONS THE REACTOR WILL BE TESTED WITH THE SAME ELECTROCHEMICAL REACTION AS USED FOR THE UPSCALING EXPERIMENTS (SEE 1). FURTHER THE ELECTROLYTICAL DETOXIFICATION OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACTUAL TOXIC WASTE SOLUTIONS WILL BE TESTED.

4. TECHNICAL/ECONOMICAL EVALUATION

THE DATA OBTAINED WITH THE EXPERIMENTS DESCRIBED IN 3 WILL BE USED FOR TECHNICAL AND ECONOMICAL EVALUATION OF THE DETOXIFICATION METHOD.
