FATE AND PATHWAYS OF TRACE ELEMENTS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT OF SARONIKOS GULF.

Objectif

THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO STUDY THE FATE AND PATHWAYS OF TRACE ELEMENTS, SUCH AS HG, CR, AS, ZN, AND CO IN A PART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA AND TO ASSESS WHY THE BENTHIC FISH DO NOT REFLECT THE TRACE ELEMENT CONCENTRATION IN SEDIMENTS AND WATER.

THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING TWO PARTS:

1. MEASUREMENT OF TRACE METAL CONCENTRATIONS IN THE WATER COLUMN:

- DETERMINATION OF THE PARTICULATE AND DISSOLVED FORMS AS WELL AS THE TOTAL AMOUNTS OF THE ABOVE METALS IN VARIOUS DEPTHS OF THE WATER COLUMN.

- DETERMINATION OF TRACE ELEMENT CONCENTRATIONS IN THE SEWAGE OF THE CENTRAL OUTFALL OF THE SARONIKOS GULF.

2. MEASUREMENT OF TRACE ELEMENT CONCENTRATIONS AND THEIR SPECIATION IN SEDIMENTS:

- HIGH-FLUX THERMAL NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS (NAA) WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE SEPARATELY THE ACID EXTRACTABLE AND RESIDUAL AMOUNTS OF METALS IN SURFACE SEDIMENTS AND CORE SAMPLES. THE CORE ANALYSES WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE HISTORY OF METAL ACCUMULATIONS IN THE SEDIMENTS AS WELL AS ON POSSIBLE MECHANISMS OF ACCUMULATION.

- FOR THE FINAL EVALUATION OF THE DATA ON TRACE ELEMENT DISTRIBUTION ALL PERTINENT OCEANOGRAPHIC DATA EXISTING ON THE SARONIKOS GULF (CURRENTS, DENSITY DISTRIBUTION, SEDIMENT GRAIN SIZE ETC.) WILL BE USED.
