TO IDENTIFY GENETICAL CHANGES OF FISH POPULATIONS PRODUCED BY POLLUTANTS, AND TO RELATE THESE TO RECRUITMENT AND MORTALITY.

FISH ARE GENETICALLY VERY VARIABLE. THE RESEARCH IS AIMED AT DICOVERING THE RESPONSE OF DIFFERENT GENETIC TYPES TO POLLUTION. THIS WILL BE DONE BY MONITORING THE FREQUENCIES OF ALLELES AT POLYMORPHIC GENE LOCI IN POPULATIONS OF YOUNG FISH (LARVAL GADOIDS: COD OR HADDOCK) CONFINED IN LARGE PVC BAGS SUSPENDED IN A SEA LOCH ON THE WEST COAST OF SCOTLAND, TO WHICH VARIOUS POLLUTANTS WILL BE ADDED.

THE STUDY WILL USE ELECTROPHORETIC TECHNIQUES TO IDENTIFY INHERITED VARIATION IN PROTEINS AND ENZYMES, AND CORRELATE CHANGES IN THE FREQUENCIES OF SUCH VARIANTS WITH THE STRESSES PRODUCED BY EXPERIMENTALLY INTRODUCED POLLUTANTS.THIS WILL REVEAL IF SOME TRAITS ARE PARTICULARLY RESPONSIVE TO POLLUTANT STRESS.

IT IS PLANNED TO SCREEN FOR C. 30 ALLOCYMIC LOCI, BUT THIS NUMBER WILL BE REDUCED IN PARTICULAR STUDIES TO INCLUDE ONLY THE MORE VARIABLE ONES IN A PARTICULAR POPULATION. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY THESE IN ADVANCE.

THE PROJECT IS AIMED SPECIFICALLY AT INVESTIGATING WHETHER CERTAIN GENOTYPES ARE RESISTANT OR SUSCEPTIBLE TO PARTICULAR POLLUTANTS OR COMBINATIONS THERE OF.
