Objectif ELABORATION AND COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF TEST SYSTEMS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF GENETIC EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMICALS AND OF THE PRODUCTS OF THEIR METABOLIC TRANSFORMATION.WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF A PRECEEDING CONTRACT (327-79-1-ENV UK) A GENETIC METHOD HAS BEEN DEVISED IN DROSOPHILA FOR ESTIMATING THE PROPORTION OF SMALL DELECTIONS AMONG POINT MUTATIONS, AND APPLIED TO THREE MUTAGENS (DEN, DEB AND EMS). THE HYPOTHESIS HAS BEEN PROPOSED THAT SMALL DELETIONS CONSTITUTE A GREATER GENETIC RISK FOR HETEROZYGOTES THAN INTRAGENIC CHANGES , SO THAT HETEROZYGOTES FOR A TREATED CHROMOSOME WILL SUFFER A GREATER LOSS OF FITNESS WHEN TREATMENT IS ONE WHICH PRODUCES DELETIONS THAN WHEN IT DOES NOT. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE NEW PROJECT IS TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS AND OBTAIN A FURTHER SUPPORT FOR THE CRITERIA USED TO CATEGORISE MUTAGENS ACCORDING TO THEIR ABILITY TO PRODUCE DELETIONS OF THE SIZE DETECTED BY OUR TECHNIQUE. THE VALIDATED APPROACH SHOULD THEN BE APPLIED TO MUTAGENS OF ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE.
