Objectif ASSESSMENT OF THE POPULATION DYNAMICS OF ENDANGERED ANIMAL SPECIES. THE PROJECT WILL ASSESS TO WHICH EXTENT BEHAVIOURAL PROPERTIES OF THE DECREASING DUTCH SEAL POPULATION DIFFER FROM AN UNDISTURBED STABLE POPULATION ON THE WEST COAST OF SCOTLAND. THE OBSERVATIONS AND MEASUREMENTS WILL INCLUDE: - STUDIES OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF HARBOUR SEALS IN THE DUTCH WADDEN SEA, AND INVESTIGATIONS ON THE GROWTH OF JUVENILES, VIZ. LENGHT AND WEIGHT PLUS BLUBBER THICKNESS, FROM BIRTH TO WEANING; - COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF OTHER HARBOUR SEAL POPULATIONS FROM RELATIVELY UNDISTURBED AND LESS POLLUTED AREAS. THE RESEARCH WILL BE UNDERTAKEN IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH THE SEA MAMMAL RESEARCH UNIT (SMRU) AT CAMBRIDGE, WHERE A STUDY ON SOME ENERGETICAL ASPECTS OF THE GREY SEAL IS UNDERWAY.
