COMBINED EFFECTS OF NOISE AND VIBRATIONS FROM VEHICLES ON THE ALERTNESS OF THE DRIVER

Objective

TO CHECK IF THE COMBINATION OF NOISE AND VIBRATIONS, EXISTING IN CARS AND LORRIES, DOES NOT REDUCE THE VIGILANCE AND REACTION TIME OF DRIVERS.

TWO RESEARCH INSTITUTES:

A) INSTITUT NATIONAL DE RECHERCHE ET SECURITE, NANCY (F),
B) IRISH FOUNDATION FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, DUBLIN (IRL),

ARE CARRYING OUT COMPLEMENTARY EXPERIMENTS ON VOLUNTEERS, EXPOSED IN LABORATORY TO NOISE ALONE, VIBRATIONS AND/OR INFRASOUNDS SEPARATELY AND IN COMBINATION OF THEM.

IN NANCY, EACH SUBJECT WILL BE SUBMITTED, IN THE DRIVING CABIN OF A LORRY, TO NORMAL DRIVING SITUATIONS SIMULATED ON A SCREEN, AND HIS REACTION TIMES AND ERRORS WILL BE MEASURED WHEN NOISE OR VIBRATIONS AND COMBINATIONS OF BOTH ARE OCCURRING. THE EXPOSURE TIME TO EACH STIMULUS VARIES BETWEEN 1 AND 2 HOURS AND A FEW PHYSIOLOGICAL MEASURES ARE ALSO RECORDED (ELECTROCARDIOGRAMMES, RESPIRATION RATE). ABOUT 40 SUBJECTS WILL TAKE PART IN THE EXPERIMENT WHICH SHOULD DEMONSTRATE IF THE EFFECTS OF NOISE AND VIBRATION ARE ADDITIVE OR NOT.
