THE SEPARATION OF ARSENIC DURING THE EXTRACTION OF NON FERROUSMETALS FROM LOW GRADE ORES AND OTHER MATERIALS

Objetivo

TO SET UP A "CLEAN TECHNOLOGY" IN ORDER TO PREVENT ARSENIC POLLUTION WHEN EXTRACTING NON FERROUS METALS FROM LOW GRADE ORES AND OTHER MATERIALS.

RAW MATERIALS FOR THE EXTRACTION OF NON-FERROUS METALS OFTEN CONTAIN ARSENIC WHICH MUST BE SEPARATED DURING THE METALLURGICAL PROCESSING OF SUCH MATERIALS

WHEN EMPLOYING THE CURRENT METHODS OF ROASTING OR SMELTING OF NON-FERROUS METAL CONTAINING MATERIAL, ARSENIC IS VOLATILISED IN THE FORM OF ARSENIC OXIDE AND THEN REMOVED FROM THE OFF-GAS BY CONDENSATION. LIQUID PHASES ARE OFTEN FORMED DURING THE CONDENSATION OF ARSENIC OXIDE WHICH CAN CAUSE BLOCKING OF THE OFF-GAS DUCT. THE REMOVAL OF ARSENIC OXIDE BUILD-UP POSES TECHNICAL PROBLEMS AND IS BECAUSE OF ITS POISONOUS NATURE DANGEROUS FOR THE PERSONNEL INVOLVED. AS WELL, A SMALL PART OF THE ARSENIC OXIDE IS DISSOLVED IN THE LIQUID USED FOR SCRUBBING THE GAS. THE REMOVAL OF ARSENIC FROM THIS LIQUID INVOLVES CONSIDERABLE TECHNOLOGY.

THE OBJECT OF THE PRESENT WORK IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROCESS BY WHICH THE ARSENIC IN THE OFF-GASES IS CONVERTED TO ARSENIC SULPHIDE, WHICH IS LESS VOLATILE THAN ARSENIC OXIDE. AS HAS BEEN SHOWN EXPERIMENTALLY THE CONDENSATION OF ARSENIC SULPHIDE VAPOR CAN BE CARRIED OUT BY SHOCK-COOLING IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS.
