Objective TO ELABORATE A WIND ATLAS FOR THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY The European Wind Atlas is the result of an investigation of the climatic wind conditions in the European Community countries. The Atlas is an attempt to present wind climatological data in a consistent and coherent manner and to provide a methodology for their use in wind resource assessment. Overall responsibility has included project coordination and theoretical work, numerical modelling, data analysis and reporting. Most fields of wind energy research and planning require a description of the wind climate. For wind turbine siting and resource assessment, the needs can often be adequately fulfilled by existing meteorological records. Such data has very limited temporal resolution, typically 1 hour. When the investigation concerns the behaviour of a wind turbine, the appropriate time constants are of the order of seconds in duration. In such cases we require data that has much higher temporal resolution than the available meteorological records. Furthermore, detailed behaviour of wind turbines and other structures depend on the spatial as well as the temporal structure of the wind field. The purpose of the Lammefjord experiment was to provide wind data suitable both as input for simulation studies and as a basis for the verification and improvement of atmospheric turbulence models. This report describes in detail the measuring site, the recording system, the data collected and the data retrieval system.DURING THE LAST SEVEN YEARS A STUDY OF THE EUROPEAN WIND CLIMATE HAS BEEN UNDERTAKEN. THE WORK, WHICH IS PART OF THE EC WIND ENERGY PROGRAMME, HAS LED TO THE EUROPEAN WIND ATLAS. A MAJOR EFFORT WAS MADE TO ANALYSE THE PRINCIPAL FACTORS CONTROLLING THE MEAN VELOCITY DISTRIBUTION OF THE WIND NEAR THE SURFACE. THE MAIN ACHIEVEMENT OF THE STUDY IS A METHODOLOGY FOR GENERALIZING LOCAL WIND DATA TO A SURROUNDING REGION FOR USE IN WIND POTENTIAL ESTIMATIONS AND WIND TURBINE SITING. THE METHODOLOGY IS BASED BOTH ON THEORETICAL STUDIES AND TEN-YEAR LONG METEOROLOGICAL TIMES SERIES FROM MORE THAN 200 STATIONS. THE EUROPEAN WIND ATLAS CONTAINS A NUMBER OF MAPS DEPICTING THE WIND CLIMATE AND ENERGY POTENTIAL OF THE EC COUNTRIES. THE STATISTICS PRESENTED FOR THE 200 STATIONS ENABLES THE USER TO PERFORM SPECIFIC WIND TURBINE SITING.
