DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTER MODELS FOR THE SIMULATION OF COAL LIQUEFACTION PROCESSES.

THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A PORTABLE MICROCOMPUTER BASED SIMULATION SYSTEM WHICH WILL ALLOW TO ASSESS THE TECHNO-ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF COMPETING DIRECT COAL LIQUEFACTION PROCESSES WITH A VIEW TO IDENTIFYING R&D PRIORITIES AND THE PROCESS ELEMENTS NEEDING IMPROVEMENTS
A portable personal computer (PC) based package has been developed which allows full analysis of mass and energy flows in any general chemical process system including power stations and combustion plant. Having completed this part of the analysis, one unique aspect of this package is that it can then establish the utilities requirement, the capital cost and the recurrent operating costs, including pay back period and internal rate of return. It has been validated against a range of chemical processes and combustion systems including coal liquefaction (very large) and power stations (very complex loops).
THE PROJECT WILL BE EXECUTED IN TWO CONSECUTIVE PHASES OVER A PERIOD OF TWO YEARS.
PHASE I, LASTING APPROXIMATELY 5 MONTHS,WILL BE GIVEN OVER TO A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC DATA CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ASSESSING COAL LIQUEFACTION PROCESSES AND TO THE DESIGN AND TESTING OF COMPUTER MODELLING STRATEGIES.
IN PHASE II SOFTWARE WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR CARRYING OUT THE NECESSARY ANALYSES AND A FLEXIBLE DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WILL BE ESTABLISHED TO ALLOW DATA TO BE UPGRADED AND MODIFIED AS NECESSARY.
THE COMPUTER PROGRAMME WILL BE MODULAR IN DESIGN SO THAT DIFFERENT PROCESSES CAN BE MODELLED SEPARATELY AND THERE WILL BE A COMMON CORE OF SUB-ROUTINES (E.G. FOR THERMODYNAMIC ANALYSIS). THE PROGRAMME WILL INCLUDE A REPORT GENERATOR WHICH WILL PERMIT FLOWCHARTS TO BE DRAWN OF THE PROCESSES UNDER CONSIDERATION.
THE SYSTEM WHICH WILL BE FULLY SELF CONTAINED WILL BE WRITTEN IN THE LANGUAGE "C" AND WILL BE DESIGNED TO RUN ON A FULLY SPECIFIED BASE-MODEL IBM COMPATIBLE COMPUTER SYSTEM.
THE PROJECT WILL BE EXECUTED IN COLLABORATION WITH BRITISH COAL AND POSSIBLE WITH FUTURE CONTRACTORS IN THE MODELLING FIELD.

STATE OF ADVANCEMENT:
TWO PROGRESS REPORTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED. PROGRESS IS WELL ADVANCED. WHITH A MINOR EFFORT THE INITIAL PROGRAMME HAS BEEN SOMEWHAT GENERALIZED TO MAKE IT MAKE IT MORE VERSATILE, FLEXIBLE AND TO EXTENSIBLE TO OTHER MODELLING APPLICATIONS.
