Cel THE AIM OF THE STUDY IS TO EVALUATE THE ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF SOFC-SYSTEMS IN THE LONG TERM,WHETHER FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION OR FOR COMBINED HEAT AND POWER PRODUCTION,BASED ON COMPREHENSIVE COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM CALCULATIONS.THIS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUTURE PROSPECTS OF SOFC-SYSTEMS. SOME RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER R&D-ACTIVITIES WILL BE DERIVED FROM THE RESULTS OF THIS WORK,ESPECIALLY FROM THE COMPARATIVE PARAMETRIC ANALYSIS. The application of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems on large (100 MW or more) and small (200 kW) scales have been studied. Results were obtained on a thorough analysis of the performance of several system designs using computerised system calculations. The economics of the systems have been evaluated by a discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis for the most promising configurations, concentrating on a comparison of allowable and estimated investment.THE SYSTEMS STUDY INCORPORATES 5 TASKS,WHICH WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN THE FOLLOWING CORRESPONDING PHASES A TO D: A. THE TECHNO-ECONOMIC INFORMATION BASE (TECHNOLOGY DEFINITION) IS PROVIDED.THIS COMPRISES:SELECTION OF SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS,DEFINITION OF PERFORMANCE DATA,THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES AND PROCESS PARAMETERS OF DIFFERENT SUBSYSTEMS AND DEFINITION OF GENERAL DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS.FOR PRACTICAL REASONS THE SOFC-SYSTEM IS SUBDIVIDED INTO 4 ELEMENTS,EACH OF WHICH WILL BE STUDIED BY ONE OF THE PARTICIPANTS. B. CALCULATIONS ARE CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF APPROPRIATE COMPUTING MODELS,ENSURING PROPER COUPLING OF THE SUBSYSTEMS. PARAMETRIC ANALYSIS SHOULD GIVE INDICATIONS ON R&D-ITEMS. C. A SHORT COST ESTIMATION STUDY.TOTAL INVESTMENT REQUIREMENTS WILL BE DERIVED BASICALLY FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES. D. THE RESULTS OF THE PREVIOUS TASKS ARE EVALUATED IN AN ECONOMIC WAY,COMPARING DIFFERENT SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS WITH "CONVENTIONAL" ALTERNATIVES ON THE BASIS OF LEVELIZED AVERAGE ELECTRICITY PRICES OR SIMPLIFIED ROI'S (RETURN ON INVESTMENT).A SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS IS MADE FOR A RESTRICTED NUMBER OF ECONOMIC AND TECHNICAL FACTORS. E. THE FINAL REPORT IS MADE UP FROM THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF ALL THE PARTICIPANTS.
