Objetivo THIS PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE IMPORTANT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT COMBUSTION IN DIESEL ENGINES AND ITS INFLUENCE FROM THE STANDPOINT OF BETTER EXHAUST GAS QUALITY AND REDUCED FUEL CONSUMPTION. THE FINDINGS THUS TAKE ACCOUNT OF THE INCREASINGLY STRINGENT ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION REGULATIONS GOVERNING THE REDUCTION OF NOXIOUS EMISSIONS AND THE NEED TO DEVELOP FUEL SAVING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES, AND WILL MAKE A DECISIVE CONTRIBUTION TO EXPLAINING THE PROCESSES TAKING PLACE IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBERS OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES. THIS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE POSSIBILITIES FOR MODIFYING THE INTERNAL DESIGN OF ENGINES TO OPTIMISE EFFICIENCY. THE PROJECT IS THEREFORE OF GREAT ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE, PARTICULARLY FROM THE STANDPOINTS OF ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY. THE MECHANISMS THAT OCCUR DURING THE COMBUSTION PROCESS IN A DIESEL ENGINE ARE STILL TO A LARGE EXTENT UNKNOWN. IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT ENGINE PARAMETERS ON THE COMBUSTION PROCESS, BASIC EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH INTO THE SPREAD OF THE FLAME IS REQUIRED. ONLY THROUGH THE PRODUCTION OF COMPREHENSIVE DATA ON FLAME PROGRESS WILL IT BE POSSIBLE TO FURTHER DEVELOP AND VERIFY COMPUTER MODELS OF THE COMBUSTION PROCESS. IN THIS RESEARCH PROJECT, THE SPREAD OF FLAME IS A SINGLE-CYLINDER DIESEL ENGINE WHICH WILL BE INVESTIGATED USING OPTICAL FIBRE MEASURING TECHNIQUES. AT THE SAME TIME, A NUMBER OF PARAMETERS WILL BE VARIED : COMBUSTION CHAMBER FROM, FUEL INJECTION, AIR INTAKE, LOAD AND ENGINE SPEED. IN ADDITION, CYLINDER PRESSURE CHANGES AND NOXIOUS EMISSIONS WILL BE MEASURED. THE RESEARCH IS INTENDED TO PROVIDE EVIDENCE ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN FLAME SPREAD, CYLINDER PRESSURE CHANGES AND NOXIOUS EMISSIONS AND THEIR DEPENDENCE ON THE ABOVE-MENTIONED DIESEL ENGINE PARAMETERS. THIS WILL PROVIDE THE EXPERIMENTAL BASIS AND DATA TO EXTEND OUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT COMBUSTION IN DIESEL ENGINES, ENABLING THE PROCESSES INVOLVED TO BE BETTER UNDERSTOOD AND ASSESSED.
