DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A 3-DIMENSIONAL FUEL SPRAY MODEL FOR RECIPROCATING ENGINES.

THE RESULT WILL BE A DOCUMENTED AND VERIFIED COMPUTER MODEL FOR THE SPRAY OF FUEL (TYPICALLY DIESEL OR GASOLINE) IN PISTON ENGINES,WHICH CAN BE BUILT INTO A THREE-DIMENSIONAL COMBUSTION MODEL AND BE USED TO INVESTIGATE THE BEHAVIOUR OF INJECTED FUEL UNDER ACTUAL OR SIMULATED ENGINE CONDITIONS (HIGH PRESSURE AND HIGH TEMPERATURE) AND TO PROVIDE DATA FOR ENGINE DEVELOPMENT.

THE ENGINE MODEL SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF MORE EFFICIENT ENGINES AND HENCE TO ENERGY CONSERVATION AND THE REDUCTION OF HARMFUL EXHAUST GAS EMISSIONS.IN ADDITION,USING THE MODEL SHOULD LEAD TO TIME AND COST SAVINGS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW ENGINES.
The aim of this work was to examine the behaviour of a spray injected into realistic engine environments (pressure and temperature histories and high turbulent flow field). To achieve this goal, a specially designed transparent engine was prepared. The effective areas of the nozzles were measured without and with a maximum cavitation. Cavitation affects the flow rate in the nozzle hole. The initial flow field inside the combustion chamber was examined with a laser Doppler velocimetry technique. High speed cinephotography combined with suitable optical techniques (shadowgraphy and back illumination method) was also applied. The overall spray and dense core penetration and cone angle were extracted from the films and the boundary conditions were checked.
For the first time an excellent broad and unique data basis is available for the validation of a computer code describing the spray propagation and vaporisation in a simulated and real diesel engine environment. 2 computer codes (EPISO-SPRAY and its successor SPEED-SPRAY) have been developed to calculate flow and spray behaviour in real reciprocating engine conditions. The SPEED mesh, because of its generality, is capable of a wider range of topologies than appears to be available from even sophisticated state of the art mesh generators. Its development has also opened areas of research into dynamic engine meshing.
THEORY: AN ALREADY-EXISTING TWO-DIMENSIONAL MODEL IS TO BE EXTENDED TO THREE DIMENSIONS. THE PRESENT PROCEDURE OF DESCRIBING THE SPRAY USING DROPLET PACKAGES WILL BE EXTENDED TO THE BEHAVIOUR OF DROPLETS SEPARATING FROM A LIQUID CORE.

EXPERIMENT: A DATABASE IS TO BE DEVELOPED TO SUPPORT AND VERIFY THE MODELLING.THE RESEARCH WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING A WINDTUNNEL AND A MODEL ENGINE.

THE MODEL WILL BE COUPLED WITH A THREE-DIMENSIONAL FLOW AND COMBUSTION MODEL.
