Cel ANTICIPATED RESULTS IN SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL, AND WHERE APPROPRIATE, IN ECONOMIC TERMS: AIM: LARGE SCALE STEAM CRACKING IS CARRIED OUT ON BATCHES BEING CONVERTED FROM ETHANE TO HEATING OIL. THE FURNACES ARE HEATED BY RADIATION AND ARE RESTRICTED TO TEMPERATURES WITHIN THE TUBES OF LESS THAN 850 C. THE USE OF STEAM CRACKING ON MORE SPECIFIC BATCHES HAS NOT BECOME PART OF INDUSTRIAL PRACTICE. THE AIM OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH CONSISTS OF USING A NEW TYPE OF VERY HIGH HEAT FLOW CRACKING FURNACE. IT IS THUS HOPED TO ILLUSTRATE THE APPEAL OF ULTRA-FAST HEATING OF THE SHORT, CONTROLLED DWELL TIME (10E-3 TO 10E-2), AND OF THE QUENCHING TIME, THUS LEADING TO A SO-CALLED "SQUARE" PROFILE. IN ADDITION TO THE NET ENERGY GAIN PER UNIT OF MASS CRACKED (DIRECT GAIN) AN ADDITIONAL GAIN IS EXPECTED IN RELATION TO THE UNIT OF MASS OF PRODUCTS SOUGHT FOLLOWING A PLANNED INCREASE IN SELECTIVITY (INDIRECT GAIN). STEAM CRACKING CAN BE APPLIED TO SPECIFIC BATCHES SUCH AS ISOBUTANE, METHYLCYCLOHEXANE, MIXTURES OF OLEFINS IN C2-C3 OR C2-C4.......FOR WHICH ESPECIALLY HIGH OLEFIN AND DIOLEFIN YIELDS ARE REQUIRED. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RESEARCH AND CHARACTERISTICS OF PROJECT: IT IS PROPOSED THAT OLEFINS BE PRODUCED SELECTIVELY VIA THE STEAM CRACKING OF SPECIFIC BATCHES OF HYDROCARBONS. SELECTIVITY CAN BE IMPROVED BY USING A NEW REACTOR FURNACE BASICALLY CONSISTING OF CONDUCTIVE CERAMICS. IT IS CONSIDERED POSSIBLE EFFECTIVELY TO CONTROL THE HEAT SUPPLY, DWELL TIME AND THE RAPID-TEMPERATURE-LOSS OPERATION. BY COMBINING THREE NEW CONCEPTS: - SELECTION OF BATCHES OF SPECIFIC HYDROCARBONS, - CERAMIC REACTOR BODY, - VERY HIGH SPEED INTRODUCTION AND REMOVAL OF THE NECESSARY HEAT, IT IS INTENDED TO REDUCE THE TOTAL QUANTITY OF ENERGY CONSUMED AND IMPROVE THE RESULTS. THE LATTER CONCEPT IN PARTICULAR SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO THE HIGHER ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF THE OPERATION.
