Cel THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP ADVANCED INTERACTIVE COMPUTER MODELLING TECHNIQUES FOR THE INTEGRATED THREE-DIMENSIONAL INTERPRETATION OF POTENTIAL FIELD (GRAVITY, MAGNETIC), SEISMIC AND BOREHOLE DATA IN COMPLEX SITUATIONS. Phase 1Interactive, graphics orientated techniques have been developed for integrated 3-dimensional interpretation of multiple geophysical datasets (multiparameter geophysical interpretation).Research concentrated on developing techniques for the analysis of gravity and magnetic data and its interpretation in conjunction with reflection seismic data and geological control (surface and borehole data). The analysis, correlation and modelling aspects of the problem were brought together into a single software environment.Functional requirements, practicalities and techniques for interactive multiparameter interpretation were addressed, hardware was procured and an outline design of the software package was developed. The practical development of modelling software on an Apollo DN590T workstation then took place. Finally, the prototype display and modelling environment was developed and refined into a more robust and useable software package which has been given the name MGIS-3D (multiparameter geophysical interpretation system).Phase 2Since completion of phase 1, research has concentrated on the development of ultrafast calculation of the gravity and magnetic response of 3-dimensional geological structures represented as gridded surfaces. The software enables very rapid calculation, in the wave number domain, of large multilayered models and the display of the resulting fields. The package is curently implemented on a Silicon Graphics workstation. The next phase of development envisaged is the integration of the software with a seismic workstation for fully integrated fast 3-dimensional interpretation of gravity, magnetic and seismic datasets.IN COMPLEX STRUCTURAL SITUATION, EXISTING TWO-DIMENSIONAL MULTICOMPONENT (SEISMICS, GRAVITY, MAGNETIC) INTERPRETATION TECHNIQUES PROVE UNSATISFACTORY. PRESENT SYSTEMS FOR 3D INTERPRETING GRAVITY AND MAGNETIC DATA TEND TO BE SLOW AND ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO USE. THE PRINCIPAL PROBLEMS OF 3D MULTICOMPONENT INTERPRETATION RELATE TO VISUALISING AND EDITING 3D MODELS AND RELATING THE COMPUTER MODEL RESPONSE TO THE OBSERVED GRAVITY AND MAGNETIC FIELDS. A NOVEL APPROACH WILL BE ADOPTED IN AN ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP A COMPLEX 3D MODEL WHICH FITS ALL THREE DATA SETS AND TO INTEGRATE THESE DATA AND MODEL WITH OTHER GEOLOGICAL, BOREHOLE AND REMOTELY SENSED DATA. A PROVISIONAL SCHEMATIC REPRESENTATION OF THE INTERPRETATION SCHEME ENVISAGED IS GIVEN. THE SOFTWARE WILL BE WRITTEN IN FORTRAN 77 AND IMPLEMENTED ON A VAX 8600 + WORKSTATION CONFIGURATION. THE MODELLING SOFTWARE WILL BE DESIGNED TO BE TECHNIQUE-INDEPENDENT, ALLOWING ADDITIONAL RESPONSE FUNCTIONS TO BE ADDED LATER. THE INITIAL WORK WILL POINT TO THE RESEARCH AND EVALUATION OF: 1) TECHNIQUES FOR INTERACTIVE DESIGN, EDITING AND PRESENTATION OF COMPLEX GEOLOGICAL MODELS. 2) MATHEMATICAL ALGORITHMS FOR CALCULATING THE GEOPHYSICAL RESPONSE FUNCTIONS (INITIALLY GRAVITY AND MAGNETIC) OF COMPLEX 3D MODELS AND FOR AUTOMATIC OPTIMIZATION OF MODELS. 3) TECHNIQUES FOR THE PRESENTATION OF RESULTS IN REAL TIME. 4) IMAGE PROCESSING TECHNIQUES FOR PRESENTATION, ENHANCEMENT AND INTEGRATION OF GRAVITY, MAGNETIC AND GEOLOGICAL DATA. THE ABOVE DESCRIBED TECHNIQUES WILL BE DEVELOPED INTO AN INTEGRATED SOFTWARE PACKAGE. A DEVELOPMENT OF EXISTING GEOPHYSICAL LOG ANALYSIS AND ONE DIMENSIONAL SEISMIC MODELLING SOFTWARE IS FORESEEN AS WELL AS THEIR INTEGRATION INTO THE ABOVE PACKAGE. AN EVALUATION AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE NEW INTERPRETATION TECHNIQUES WILL BE MADE BY APPLYING THEM TO A SUITABLE AREA IN GREAT BRITAIN.
