OPTIMISATION OF ETHANOL PRODUCTION PROCESS FROM DIFFERENT RAW MATERIALS.

Ziel

STARCH (CEREALS) AND SUGAR (MOLASSES, SORGHUM) CONTAINING RAW MATERIALS WILL BE TREATED BY INNOVATIVE HYDROLYSIS AND FERMENTATION TESTS WITH YEAST RECYCLE IN ORDER TO OPTIMISE THE PROCESS PARAMETERS EG MASS AND ENERGY BALANCE, COST REDUCTION OF A PILOT SACCHARIFICATION/FERMENTATION UNIT.
THE INNOVATIVE ELEMENTS WILL BE THE FOLLOWING:

- NEW ENZYMES AND/OR ENZYMATIC COMPLEXES FOR SACCHARIFICATION AND LIQUEFACTION OF CEREALS WILL BE USED AIMING AT THE DEGRADATION OF CELL WALL AND DECREASING SACCHARIFICATION AND FERMENTATION TIME.

- CONTINUOUS FERMENTATION PROCESS.

- USE OF NEW YEASTS (GENETICALLY MODIFIED, HIGH-YIELD, WITH SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF OSMOTIC-TOLERANCE AND THERMO-RESISTANCE).

- YEAST RECYCLE.

- SWEET SORGHUM WILL BE TESTED AS A FEEDSTOCK FOR ETHANOL PRODUCTION INCLUDING HYDROLYSIS OF BAGASSE.

I.- PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES.

PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS AND FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR THE CHOICE OF RAW MATERIALS THAT, POTENTIALLY, CAN BE PROCESSED ON THE PLANT..

DEFINITION OF FIRST TRIAL MASS AND ENERGY BALANCE, FOR EACH RAW MATERIAL AND FOR EACH PROCESSING SCHEME.

DEFINITION OF ENERGY/ENZYMES/CHEMICAL CONSUMPTIONS ON THE BASE OF SUPPLIERS DATA AND THE AVAILABLE LITERATURE.

PLANNING OF THE EXPERIMENTATION CARRIED OUT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE FIRST DEFINITION OF THE PROCESS DYNAMIC MODELS; ANALYSIS OF THE PROCESS VARIABLES FOR THEIR PRELIMINARY SCREENING AND FOR THE DEFINITION OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PARAMETERS.

II.- EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITIES.

IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RESULT OF ACTIVITY I THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES WILL BE EXECUTED:
INSTALLATION OF ADDITIONAL INSTRUMENTATION TO MEASURE PROCESS VARIABLES AND SELECTED PARAMETERS (PARTICULARLY DENSITY/VISCOSITY/PH RECORDERS); PLANT MODIFICATIONS NECESSARY FOR THE INSTRUMENTATION AND FOR THE EXECUTION OF THE PROGRAMMED TESTS.

EXECUTION OF THE TESTS FOR EACH RAW MATERIAL WILL BE PERFORMED IN ORDER TO OBTAIN DYNAMIC INDICATIONS OF THE PROCESS VARIABLES IN RESPECT OF THE SELECTED VALUES FOR VARIOUS PARAMETERS.

CONCERNING THE STARCHY MATERIAL CONVERSION, THE FOLLOWING MAIN PARAMETERS WILL BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION:
- TYPE OF ENZYMES AND/OR THEIR MIXTURES
- MIXING PATTERNS WITHIN THE DIFFERENT CONVERSION STAGES
- CLEAR STILLAGE FLOW-RATE, COMING FROM DISTILLATION, FOR THE STARCH DILUTION
- GRANULOMETRY OF THE PROCESSED MATERIAL.

THE TRANSPORT PHENOMENA AND THE KINETIC MECHANISM, IN RESPECT OF THE SHEAR MIXING, WILL BE STUDIED WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION.

III.- INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS, MODELLING.

SIMULATION MODELS OF THE EXAMINED PROCESS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED AIMING TO:
- DEFINE OPTIMISED STEADY-STATE CONFIGURATIONS WITH THE OVERALL MATERIAL AND ENERGY BALANCES.
- DEVELOP THE CORRELATION BETWEEN PROCESS VARIABLES AND PARAMETERS.
- ESTABLISH THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS (INVESTMENT/OPERATING COSTS) WITH RESPECT TO A MULTIPURPOSE PLANT CONFIGURATION.

THE TESTS AND THE MEASURES WILL BE EXECUTED ON THE FOLLOWING PLANTS: CAVIRO-FAENZA (RA).
COMPLEX FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ETHANOL FROM DIFFERENT RAW MATERIALS.
IND CHIMICA VALENZANA BORGORICCO (PA).
COMPLEX FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ETHANOL FROM DIFFERENT RAW MATERIALS.
C I FRILLI S GIMIGNANA (SI).
PILOT UNITS (DISTILLATION, FERMENTATION, CONCENTRATION) ON WHICH WILL BE EXECUTED TESTS PARTICULARLY FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ALCOHOL FROM SWEET SORGHUM.
