IMPROVEMENT OF PYROLYSIS CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY UTILIZING AGRICULTURAL AND FORESTRY WASTES.

THE PYROLYSIS OIL IS TO BE IMPROVED IN VISCOSITY, ASH CONTENT, CORROSIVENESS, AND STABILITY BY OPTIMIZING THE OVERALL PYROLYSIS PROCESS IN THAT RESPECT. IN PARALLEL, SURPLUS PYROLYSISGAS SHALL BE TREATED TO BE USED IN A GAS ENGINE FOR ELECTRICITY GENERATION. SEVERAL TYPES OF AGRICULTURAL AND FORESTRY WASTE WILL BE INVESTIGATED ON.

1) THE UTILIZATION OF AGRICULTURAL AND FORESTRY WASTES IN PYROLYSIS PROCESS TAKES PLACE IN A PILOT PLANT ERECTED BY TAG AND ITALENERGIE IN COOPERATION. THE PRODUCTS ARE CHARCOAL, PYROLYSIS OIL AND PYROLYSIS GAS. THE PYROLYSIS OIL DIFFERES GREATLY FROM THE COMMON FUEL OILS. THE ENHANCEMENT OF YIELD AND QUALITY OF THE OIL IS POSSIBLE BY VARIATION OF THE PROCESS PARAMETERS. THE OPTIMIZATION PHASE, HOWEVER, WILL BE DIFFICULT AND TAKES A LONG TIME SINCE ALL THE CHANGES IN THE PROCESS PARAMETERS WILL AFFECT THE OVERALL PROCESS AND ITS ENERGY BALANCE.

THE UTILIZATION OF MODERN STRATEGIES FOR PROCESS OPTIMIZATION IN MULTI-PARAMETER SYSTEMS SHOULD REDUCE THE NEEDED EFFORT TO AMANAGEABLE TASK. THE BASIS OF ANY OPTIMIZATION STRATEGY, HOWEVER, IS TO FORMULATE A MATHEMATICALLY DEFINED TARGET FUNCTION. FURTHERMORE, THE RESULTS OF THE OPTIMIZATION SHOULD BE TESTED ON DIFFERENT INPUT MATERIALS.
THIS GIVES THE WHOLE PROJECT A THREE-PHASE STRUCTURES:

1.A) DEVELOPMENT OF TARGET-FUNCTION FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE PYROLYSIS PROCESS AND SETUP OF A MEASURING AND TESTING SCHEME;
1.B) THE OPTIMIZATION RUNS;
1.C) TESTS OF THE RESULTS IN LONG-TERM RUNS AND TRANSFER TO DIFFERENT INPUT MATERIALS.

2) THE PYROLYSIS GAS THAT COMES FROM THE PROCESS WHICH IS MAINLY USED FOR THE DRYING OF THE INPUT MATERIAL IS PARTIALLY IN EXCESS. THE EXCESS GAS IS PLANNED TO BE CONDITIONED TO SERVE AS FUEL FOR AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICITY. THESE TESTS ARE TO BE CARRIED OUT IN PARALLEL TO THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE PYROLYSIS OIL PRODUCTION.
IN CASE OF SUCCESS IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO RUN TO THE OVERALL PROCESS WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL ENERGY, I E THE LECTRIC POWER NEEDED WILL BE FURNISHED BY THE USE OF PYROLYSIS GAS. FOR THIS TASK THE EXISTING GAS-CLEANING SYSTEM MUST BE FURTHER DEVELOPED AND A GAS ENGINE MUST BE INSTALLED FOR TEST RUNS.

THIS PART OF THE PROJECT SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT IN PARALLEL TO THE OPTIMIZATION OF PYROLYSIS OIL PRODUCTION, AND IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PHASES AS WELL:
- DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A GAS CONDITIONING SYSTEM
- TEST RUNS WITHOUT ENGINE
- GAS-ENGINE TESTS WITH LONG RUNS
