THE CONCEPT OF USING AGRICULTURE FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION COULD BE OF MAIN INTEREST FOR EEC POLICYMAKERS. BUT THE ECONOMICAL PROFITABILITY OF SUCH A PROJECT CAN ONLY BE WELL ASSESSED IF ONE INCLUDES A TECHNOLOGICAL FORECASTING STUDY ABOUT THOSE VARIOUS ENERGY CHANNELS FROM BIOMASS.
THE PRESENT STUDY WILL ANALYSE ALL THESE POSSIBLE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES AND MAKE A PROSPECTIVE EVALUATION OF PRODUCTION COSTS OF ENERGY FROM BIOMASS IN THE EEC IN ORDER TO ASCERTAIN THE POSITION OF AN AGRO ENERGY SECTOR IN RELATION TO CONVENTIONNAL ENERGY SECTORS ON A LONG TERM BASIS.
IN THE FIELD OF BIOMASS PRODUCTION, A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION COSTS (PAR UNIT OF OUTPUT) IN FRANCE SHOWED A DECREASE IN THE CASE OF SUGAR BEET (3% PER YEAR) BUT A CONSTANCY IN THE CASE OF WHEAT (THE YIELD INCREASE IS BALANCED BY A CORRELATIVE INCREASE OF INPUTS), AND THE RESULTS ARE QUITE THE SAME EXPRESSED IN CONSTANT CURRENCY OR IN VOLUME. THE EVALUATION OF PRODUCTION COSTS IN A OPTIMIZED FUTURE (ALL PARAMETERS SET AT THEIR MORE ADVANTAGEOUS LEVEL) IS UNDER WAY.
IN THE FIELD OF BIOMASS PROCESSING, A DETAILED ANALYSIS OF ETHANOL PRODUCTION SHOWED THAT IN SPITE OF THE NUMEROUS RESEARCHES CONDUCTED IN FERMENTATION OR SEPARATION, VERY LITTLE DECREASE IN TRANSFORMATION COSTS COULD BE EXPECTED (10 TO 20%), EXCEPTED IF A PERFORMANT YEAST OR BACTERIE ABLE TO TRANSFORM C5 SUGAR COULD BE DEVELOPPED. AS FAR AS THERMOCHEMICAL ROUTES ARE CONCERNED, THE CHARCOAL SLURRY PRODUCTION IS THE ONE WHICH COULD BE GREATLY IMPROVED IN A CLOSE FUTURE; METHANOL PRODUCTION OR DIRECT COMBUSTION DO NOT USE TECHNIQUES LIKELY TO CHANGE SO MUCH IN THE FUTURE.
