MEASURES TO PRODUCE THE DETERIORATION WITH TIME OF INSULATING PROPERTIES IN RIGID POLYURETHANE FOAMS

THE INSULATING PROPERTIES OF POLYURETHANE DETERIORATE WITH TIME. CSTB/CENG, FRANCE FOUND THAT AFTER 14 DAYS OF ACCELERATED AGING AT 70 DEGREES C AND WITH A HUMYDITY OF 95 %, THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY INCREASED BY 20 - 30 % (DENSITY +/- 25 KG/M3). THE INFLUENCE WAS INVESTIGATED OF DIFFERENT TYPES AND QUANTITIES OF RAW MATERIAL FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POLYURETHANE (7 CATALYSTS AND 12 TENSIOACTIVES). UNFAVORABLE COMBINATIONS RESULTED, AFTER WEATHERING, IN A VALUE FOR THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF 0,035 W/M DEGREE K WHEREAS A SUITABLE COMBINATION OF CATALYSTS AND TENSIOACTIVES GAVE, AFTER WEATHERING, A MUCH BETTER THERMAL INSULATION (0,025 W/M DEGREE K). THE WATER CONTENT IN THE MIXTURE DOES NOT INFLUENCE THE CELL GEOMETRY NOR THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY BUT HAS A MARKET INFLUENCE ON REACTIVITY, DENSITY AND DIMENSIONAL STABILITY OF THE FOAM. THE DIMENSIONAL STABILITY DECREASES WHEN THE WATER CONTENT GOES FROM 0 % TO 4 %. FINALLY IN PRELIMINARY TESTS IT WAS INVESTIGATED WHETHER IT IS POSSIBLE TO IMPROVE INSULATION PROPERTIES BY DECREASING THE GAS DIFFUSION THROUGH CELL WALLS. THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED BY ADDING A REACTIVE ADDITIVE; A COMPOUND WITH HYDROXYL GROUPS WHICH REACTS WITH ISOCYANATE.

IN THE FOLLOW-UP PROJECT INVESTIGATIONS CONFIRMED THAT GAS DIFFUSION AND THEREFORE HEAT CONDUCTIVITY COULD BE CONSIDERABLY REDUCED. IN THIS WAY THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COULD BE BROUGHT DOWN FROM 0,030 W/M DEGREE K TO 0,020 W/M DEGREE K. THIS NEW METHOD HAS BEEN INCORPORATED IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF POLYURETHANE.
