Cel THERE IS INCREASING EVIDENCE THAT THE ACTIVITIES OF GENETICALLY-DETERMINED DNA REPAIR FUNCTIONS ARE MAJOR FACTORS INFLUENCING THE RESPONSE OF MAMMALIAN CELLS TO IONIZING RADIATION. MUTATION AND RECOMBINATION ARE IMPORTANT RESPONSES TO RADIATION DAMAGE: THEY MAY LEAD TO GENETIC DISORDERS IN MAN AS WELL AS PREDISPOSITION TO A VARIETY OF HARMFUL AGENTS. DURING THE LAST FEW YEARS THERE HAVE BEEN REMARKABLE ADVANCES IN RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNIQUES WHICH MAY BE APPLIED TO THE STUDY OF REPAIR PROCESSES AND THE ANALYSIS OF MUTATION AND RECOMBINATION. IN THE PROPOSALS GIVEN BELOW GENE TRANSFER AND RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNIQUES WILL BE USED TO STUDY MOLECULAR ASPECTS OF RADIATION RESPONSE IN CULTURED MAMMALIAN CELLS.
