Objetivo CSM, WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE ECSC (CONVENTION 7210CA/408), HAS STUDIED AND DEVELOPED A PROCESS (ESR-PM) FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF BIMETALLIC COMPOUND ROLLING-MILL ROLLS IN WHICH THE OUTER HIGH - ALLOY SHELL WAS OBTAINED BY REMELTING A TUBULAR ELECTRODE CONSISTING OF TWO COAXIAL METALLIC CASTINGS WITH POWDERS PACKED IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE TWO CASTINGS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS NEW RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF THE ESR-PM PROCESS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF HOLLOW INGOTS STARTING FROM TUBULAR ELECTRODES. FOR THIS RESEARCH WORK CSM WILL USE EXISTING 12 KA ESR PLANT (D.C. OR A.C. 0 + 10 HZ). IN THE HOLLOW ELECTRODES THE MIX OF METAL POWDERS IS TAILORED IN ORDER TO REACH THE TARGET CHEMICAL COMPOSITION IN THE RESULTING INGOT. FURTHERMORE, IT IS PLANNED TO ASSESS WHETHER METAL POWDERS CAN BE REPLACED TO A CERTAIN EXTENT BY PROCESS SCRAP OF SUITABLE SIZE AND CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. THE EQUIPMENT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF HOLLOW INGOTS CONSISTS OF A MOULD AND A MANDREL BOTH OF WHICH HAVE TWO COMPONENT PARTS, I.E. (I) A LOWER CYLINDRICAL WATER-COOLED COPPER MOULD IN WHICH THE LIQUID METAL SOLIDIFIES; (II) AN UPPER FLARED PORTION MADE OF REFRACTORY MATERIAL OR GRAPHITE IN WHICH THE MELTING PROCESS TAKES PLACE. FOR THIS PROJECT THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITIONS WILL BE CHOSEN WITHIN THE RANGE : : 2-1/4 CR, 1% MO CREEP RESISTANT STEELS : 1 CR, 1 MO, 0,25 V ROTOR STEELS AISI: 321 STAINLESS STEELS AISI: 4330, 4340 HIGH RESISTANCE LOW ALLOY STEELS IT IS SUPPOSED THAT THE TECHNIQUE WILL ALSO LEND ITSELF FOR SUPERALLOYS. THE NEW SEMIPRODUCTS COULD BE ORIGIN OF HIGH DUTY TUBING; ABSENCE OF SEGREGATION AVOIDS THE NEED FOR CROP END CUTTING, BALANCING THE POSSIBLE INCREASE OF COST AT THE INGOT STAGE WITH A VERY LOW METALLIC LOSS.
