INDUCED DEPHOSPHORIZATION OF STEEL.

Objective

INCREASINGLY SEVERE CONDITIONS OF USE SUGGEST THAT THERE WILL IN FUTURE BE A GROWTH IN DEMAND FOR STEELS WHICH HAVE HIGH STRENGTH UNDER LOW-TEMPERATURE, HIGH-PRESSURE AND STRESS-CORROSION CONDITIONS.
SUCH PRODUCTS MUST BE OF HIGH PURITY WITH EXTREMELY LOW CONTENTS OF P, S AND OTHER ELEMENTS, SUCH AS AS, SB, SN, ETC. AND MUST THEREFORE BE PRODUCED WITH HIGHLY SOPHISTICATED LADLE EQUIPMENT.
THE AIM OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT DESCRIBED BELOW IS TO DEFINE A DEPHOSPHORIZATION PROCESS FOR PRODUCING STEEL WITH A P CONTENT OF UNDER 20 PPM.
THERE ARE PLANS FOR A PREPARATORY PHASE TO IDENTIFY EFFECTIVE DEPHOSPHORIZING MIXTURES FOR DEVELOPMENT ON A LABORATORY OR PILOT SCALE, WITH A SUBSEQUENT INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ON A LABORATORY OR PILOT SCALE, WITH A SUBSEQUENT INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT PHASE WHICH WOULD PREFERABLY TAKE PLACE AT THE N. SIAS STEELWORKS IN AOSTA ON A 10-20 TONNE FURNACE. LARGER-SCALE WORK (85 TONNE) WOULD BE CARRIED OUT AT THE DALMINE STEELWORKS.

EXAMINATIONS WILL COVER CONSTRUCTION STEELS (FOR USE IN HELICOPTERS AND THE OIL INDUSTRY) AND STAINLESS STEELS (FOR THE CHEMICAL AND NUCLEAR INDUSTRIES), FOR WHICH THE DEPHOSPHORIZING TREATMENT MUST BE CARRIED OUT IN OXIDIZING AND REDUCING CONDITIONS RESPECTIVELY.

IN PRACTICE, THE EXPERIMENTS AT N. SIAS IN AOSTA CONSIST OF DEPHOSPHORIZATION TESTS UNDER, OXIDIZING CONDITIONS, IN ORDER TO DEVELOP AND COMPARE ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES, AND UNDER REDUCING CONDITIONS WITH PULSED INJECTION OF CAC2 AND CAF2 MIXTURES AND LIGHT ALLOYS OF CA, BA, SI AND AL.
THERE ARE ALSO PLANS TO DEVELOP A TECHNIQUE FOR OXIDIZING SLAG, SO AS TO CONVERT THE PHOSPHIDES WHICH FROM WHEN WORKING UNDER REDUCING CONDITIONS.
ANY FAVOURABLE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTS AT N, SIAS WILL BE TESTED ON A LARGER SCALE AT THE DALMINE STEELWORKS.
FINALLY, TO COMPLEMENT THE ABOVE, THE PRODUCT WILL BE CHARACTERIZED IN ORDER TO QUANTIFY THE IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PROPERTIES OF THE STEELS.
