Objetivo BACTERIA WERE ISOLATED FROM LEAF SURFACES AND FROM XYLEM SAP OF HEALTHY AND WATERMARKED SALIX ALBA TREES. OF THE 202 PURE BACTERIAL CULTURES OBTAINED IN THIS WAY, 59 WERE SELECTED FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. THE SELECTED ISOLATES WERE TESTED SEROLOGICALLY WITH AN ANTISERUM PREPARED FROM WHOLE CELLS OF E.SALICIS. NINES ISOLATES REACTED POSITIVELY IN MICRO-AGGLUTINATION, 4 OF THEM TO APPROXIMATELY THE SAME AGGLUTINATION TITRE AS THE HOMOLOGUE STRAIN. WHEN TESTED WITH IMMUNOFLUORESCENCE IN A WORKING DILUTION 1:60, TWO ISOLATES REACTED POSITIVELY. OF THESE, ONE WAS VERY PROBABLY E.SALICIS; THE OTHER (ISOLATE 51) SHOWED A DIFFERENT COLONY MORPHOLOGY. DOUBLE DIFFUSION TESTS WITH ABSORBED AND UNABSORBED ANTISERUM REVELATED NO SEROLOGICAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN E.SALICIS AND THE CROSS-REACTING ISOLATE 51. THESE FINDINGS IMPLY THAT IN THE EPIPHYTIC AND ENDOPHYTIC FLORAS OF SALIX ALBA THERE OCCUR BACTERIA THAT HAVE ANTIGENS IN COMMON WITH ERWINIA SALICIS.
