DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH STRENGTH CR-MO STEEL FOR PRESSURE VESSELS OPERATING AT HIGH TEMPERATURE UNDER HYDROGEN PRESSURE.

Ziel

PRESSURE VESSELS SUCH AS HYDROCRACKERS OR HYDROSULFURIZERS, ARE NOW WORKING, AND WILL DO SO EVEN MORE, IN VERY SEVERE CONDITIONS: INCREASED STRESSES, HIGH HYDROGEN PRESSURES, HIGH TEMPERATURES. THE USUAL STEEL FOR THIS KIND OF APPLICATION IS THE 2.25 CR - 1 MO STEEL.
WITH THE PROJECTED FUTURE EVOLUTION OF PRESSURE VESSELS, SUCH A STEEL WITH ITS BASE COMPOSITION AND HEAT TREATMENTS, WILL BECOME OBSOLETE.
THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY IS TO MODIFY THE 2.25 CR - MO BASE COMPOSITION USING APPROPRIATE ADDITIONS IN ORDER TO INCREASE ITS MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS (OUTS UP TO 780 MPA), BUT KEEPING IN MIND ITS PARTICULAR FUTURE ENVIRONMENT (I.E. HIGH TEMPERATURE AND HYDROGEN PROBLEMS).

THIS PROGRAM WILL INCLUDE THREE PARTS:
1) A STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF THE VARIOUS CHOSEN ADDITIONS ON HIGH TEMPERATURE BEHAVIOUR: HIGH TEMPERATURE TENSILE PROPERTIES, TEMPER EMBRITTLEMENT, CREEP;
2) A STUDY OF THE EFFECT OF THE BEST FOUND ADDITIONS ON HYDROGEN RELATED PROBLEMS: DECARBURIZATION, FRACTURE MECHANICS ON AUTOCLAVE HYDROGEN CHARGED SPECIMENS, CREEP IN HYDROGEN, DISBONDING OF THE BASE METAL WITH A TYPICAL OVERLAY;
3) SYNTHESIS AND RESULTS INTERPRETATION BASED ON OBSERVED MECHANISMS, FOLLOWED BY THE MAKING AND TESTING OF AN INDUSTRIAL HEAT AND WELDS USING THE OPTIMUM COMPOSITION.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUCH STEELS IN EUROPE IS IMPORTANT IN THE VIEW OF INCREASING RESEARCH ON THIS SUBJECT ON THE PART OF THE USA (MPC PROGRAMMES) AND JAPAN (JPVRC PROGRAMMES), AND ACCORDING TO ACTUAL PREDICTION OF ABOUT A HUNDRED HYDROCRACKING EQUIPMENTS NEEDED UP TO THE YEAR 2000.
