PHOSPHORUS AND SERVICE PROPERTIES OF STEEL.

Cel



STEELS WITH AN EXTREMELY LOW PHOSPHORUS CONTENT, AND THUS WITH IMPROVED PROPERTIES, ARE USED TO A STEADILY INCREASING EXTENT LATELY. AN ANALYSIS OF THE RELEVANT LITERATURE, PARTICULARLY WITH REGARD TO THE EFFECT OF EXTREMELY LOW PHOSPHORUS CONTENTS ON THE CORROSION AND TOUGHNESS BEHAVIOUR OF MAJOR STEEL GRADES, HAS REVEALED THE GREAT IMPORTANCE ATTACHED TO THE ADJUSTMENT OF PHOSPHORUS CONTENTS OF LESS THAN 0.010%.
THE PUBLISHED RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONS DO IN FACT INDICATE THAT EXTREMELY LOW PHOSPHORUS CONTENTS OF THE STEELS UNDER CONSIDERATION LEAD TO HIGHER CORROSION RESISTANCE AND MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO PREVENT BOTH SEPARATIONS AND TEMPER BRITTLENESS, HOWEVER, THE BASIC INTERRELATIONSHIPS INVOLVED HAVE STILL NOT BEEN DEFINITELY CLARIFIED. FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS ON THE EFFECT OF EXTREMELY LOW PHOSPHORUS CONTENTS ON THE SERVICE PROPERTIES OF THE STEELS ARE THEREFORE REQUIRED, PARTICULARLY IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE LOWER LIMITS OF PHOSPHORUS CONTENT WHICH ARE TECHNICALLY APPROPRIATE AND ECONOMICALLY REASONABLE.

AN EXTENSIVE RESEARCH PROJECT INVOLVING SEVERAL GERMAN IRON AND STEEL WORKS IS DESIGNED TO COMPREHENSIVELY INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF EXTREMELY LOW PHOSPHORUS CONTENTS ON THE CORROSION AND TOUGHNESS BEHAVIOUR OF IMPORTANT STEEL GRADES. BOTH THE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING BEHAVIOR IN TESTS UNDER CONSTANT LOAD AND AT A CONSTANT STRAIN RATE, AND THE HYDROGEN-INDUCED CRACKING ACCORDING TO NACE SPECIFICATION AND BP TEST WILL BE DETERMINED ON A TUBE STEEL, A STEEL GRADE FEATURING A HIGH IMPACT STRENGTH AT LOW TEMPERATURE USED IN REACTOR ENGINEERING, A FINEGRAINED STRUCTURAL STEEL, AND A STEEL GRADE FOR HARDENING AND TEMPERING.
FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE TOUGHNESS BEHAVIOUR, THE AV AND COD VALUES WILL BE DETERMINED ON A TUBE STEEL, THE STEEL GRADE FEATURING A HIGH IMPACT STRENGTH AT LOW TEMPERATURE USED IN REACTOR ENGINEERING, A CREEP RESISTANT STEEL, AND A FORGING STEEL.
THE PRODUCTS TO BE SUBJECT TO THE TESTS WILL BE MADE OF STEEL FROM INDUSTRIALLY MOLTEN AND CONTINUOUSLY CAST MELTS, PRODUCED WITH FOUR PHOSPHORUS CONTENTS OF 0.002%, 0.005%, 0.0008%, AND 0.015%, IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE PROPERTIES FEATURED BY THE STEELS AND THEIR PHOSPHORUS CONTENTS.
