PLASMA LADLE FURNACE METALLURGY.

Objectif

TILL NOW LF WITH ELECTRIC ARC HEATING IS WELL KNOWN. BUT AN INCREASE OF THE CARBON CONTENT IS CAUSED BY THE GRAPHITE-ELECTRODES ESPECIALLY IN THE CASE OF HEATING LOW CARBON STEELS.
THE BATH OF THE PLASMA LF WILL BE STIRRED BY INERTGAS INJECTED BY A POROUS PLUG IN THE LADLE BOTTOM. AN INERTGAS-ATMOSPHERE WILL BE BUILT OVER THE STEEL SURFACE.
WITH THE PLASMA-TORCH-HEATED LF IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO HEAT LOW CARBON OR HIGH ALLOYED STEELS WITHOUT ANY CHANGE OF THE STEEL COMPOSITION.
OBJECT WILL BE THE RESEARCH AND STUDY OF THE METALLURGICAL CONDITIONS OF PLASMA-HEATED LIQUID STEEL, MAINLY IN VIEW ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF CARBON AND THE OXIDATION OF MN, SI, CR, AL, TI, ETC. AS WELL AS THE NITROGEN PICK-UP.
THE DISSOLUTION RATE OF ALLOYS, THE BATH-HOMOGENEITY, HEATING RATE AND OTHER PARAMETERS OF THE INSTALLATION WILL BE INVESTIGATED FURTHERMORE.
THE REACTIONS OF REACTIVE SLAGS ADDED TO THE BATH OF A PLASMA LADLE-FURNACE AND EXPOSED TO THE HIGH ENERGY INTENSITY OF THREE-PHASE PLASMA-TORCHES WILL BE STUDIED AS WELL AS THE EFFICIENCY OF DESULFURIZING SLAG MIXTURES.
THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME WILL LAST 2,5 YEARS. THE COSTS OF THE PROJECT AMOUNT TO DM 752 532.

IN COMPARISON THE HEATING OF A LF WITH PLASMA-TORCHES AVOIDS THE DISADVANTAGE OF THE ELECTRIC ARC HEATING WITH GRAPHITE ELECTRODES. A PLASMA-TORCH-HEATED LF WILL BE AVAILABLE AT KRUPP SUDWESTFALEN AG, SIEGEN, WEST-GERMANY, FROM JANUARY 1985 ACCORDING TO THE EXPERIENCES GAINED BY KRUPP-FORSCHUNGS-INSTITUT (ESSEN) IN THE DEVELOPING PERIOD, THIS LF WILL BE RUN BY 4,5 MW WITH THREE-PHASE PLASMA TORCHES WITHOUT ANY BOTTOM ELECTRODE.
