FINITE ELEMENT MODELLING OF THE DEFORMATION PROCESSING OF ANISOTROPIC METALS AND COMPOSITES

Objetivo

The overall objective of this fundamental research programme is to develop computer based finite-element (FE) modelling tools for forging and sheet forming of anisotropic materials (metals and composites).

The research programme, by building upon earlier collaborative research between the partners, will :

-develop an anisotropic enhancement to an existing 3-dimensional thermo-mechanical, elastic-plastic, large displacement FE programme for the modelling of deformation processing of materials,
-develop realistic anisotropic material models based on texture data (orientation distribution functions), for metals and composites, for inclusion in the finite-element programme,
-validate the predictive computer models against forging, rolling and sheet forming trials.

The research programme represents a major advance, in the field as it proposes, for the first time, to incorporate realistic anisotropic elastic-plastic material properties, derived from physical observations, into a finite-element plasticity programme for industrial applications.
