Obiettivo A feasibility study of a mobile, variable geometry unit for nondestructive solid waste measurements has been carried out.In spite of the recent progress made in the field of non-destructive assay techniques, some difficulties remain. Research has been undertaken with the main producers of waste in CEC countries from facilities in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Information is given on volumes, activity levels, density, matrix and conditioning. In order to identify the areas where a mobile measurement could apply, attention was focused on the field of solid waste and more especially on the alpha emitters. The military field was not taken into account. The criteria for waste storage varies within countries. There are also differences in the interpretation of the regulations such as maximum activity on individual waste items and the relationship to the averaged inventory for the whole facility. The performance of the nondestructive assay (NDA) systems were studied. In few cases more than 1 NDA approach is used either to improve the precision of the measurement or to deal with variations in the waste matrix or density.THE WORK PROPOSED CONSTITUTES THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS THE FINAL OBJECTIVE AND MAINLY COMPRISES: - A SURVEY OF THE PRESENT SITUATION IN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY (CHARACTERIZATION OF THE WASTE, PRODUCTION AND CONDITIONING, EXISTING MEASURING EQUIPMENT) IN ORDER TO DEFINE SUITABLE TECHNIQUES AND THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR INTERPRETATION SOFTWARE. - A PRELIMINARY FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE MOBILE EQUIPMENT. THIS INITIAL PHASE IMPLEMENTED JOINTLY BY CEA/SGN AND UKAEA/DOUNREAY) COULD BE FOLLOWED BY A DETAILED PROJECT AND THE CONSTRUCTION AND QUALIFICATION OF THE EQUIPMENT WITH ONE (OR TWO) ADDITIONAL PARTNERS. THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPAL TASKS ARE COVERED BY THE PROGRAMME: 1. SURVEY IN THE COUNTRIES OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY 2. SUMMARY ANALYSIS 3. PROPOSED TECHNIQUES 4. DETECTION LIMITS AND ACCURACY OF THE MEASUREMENTS 5. PROBLEMS STILL UNSOLVED TODAY 6. PRELIMINARY PROJECT CONCERNING THE MOBILE EQUIPMENT 7. CONSOLIDATED REPORT ON THE INITIAL PHASE.
