Coherent Optical Systems for Business Routing and Access

Obiettivo

The main objective of the project is to provide short and medium term implementations of coherent multi-channel (CMC) systems in business customer premises networks (BCPNs), interconnections with a variable number of optical carriers between BCPNs and, in the transit network, flexible and re-configurable interconnections between clusters of BCPNs.
The main objectives of the research was to provide short and medium term implementations of coherent multichannel (CMC) systems in business customer premises networks (BCPN), interconnections with a variable number of optical carriers between BCPNs and, in the transit network, flexible and reconfigurable interconnections between clusters of BCPNs.

The key issues in the research are:
field tests of CMC techniques,using applications supporting the transparency and flexibility of these techniques;
the investigation of multichannel operation and control.
Technical Approach

Partners with extensive experience in CMC systems have teamed up with two public network operators and one private network operator for the implementation of various CMC systems in different environments and with different applications in mind. This project is a follow-up of the R1010 project in the sense that all experience gained there in the domain of coherent transmission, both at system level and at component level, is brought to bear in the field test to be implemented in the course of the project. One of the important new elements is the issue of frequency allocation and control in a flexible multi-channel network. Coherent transmission equipment operating at a moderate bitrate (140 and 155Mbit/s) is developed and used for video conferencing and business traffic applications. 2.5Gbit/s coherent systems carry digitised, uncompressed HDTV signals in a studio environment. Dedicated components are developed for these systems and careful steps taken towards increasing opto-electronic integration.

Key Issues

- Deployment of four field tests, using applications supporting the transparency and flexibility of the CMC based COBRA network.
- Demonstration of the management, operation and control of the multi-channel networks.
- Realisation of dedicated system components for the network.
- Performance evaluation of the field tests in order to provide proof of the versatility of the COBRA network concept in field environments.

Expected Impact

The transparency and flexibility of the COBRA network concept will be clearly visible in the field tests. The performance evaluation reports will show that CMC based multi-carrier networks can be operated, managed and controlled in field environments. Dedicated components, OEICs and functional modules realised by COBRA will provide proof for the possibilities to further develop the system hardware. The results of the COBRA project will provide network operators and business system users with realistic upgrade strategies.
