Obiettivo TRAPPIST aims to synthesise NDT methods (Non Destructive Testing) in Europe to get a higher level of quality assurance and product reliability especially for fields where security is paramount. The main goal is the design of a distributed 3D NDT test system, connecting a group of important 3D NDT institutes and end-users in Europe using high speed test beds for the assessment of an optimum transmission rate for remote expertise scenarios covering several industrial application fields of NDT.The research is a pilot project relevant to industry and manufacturing, which investigates shared access to nondestructive (NDT) methods in Europe. The general objective is the design of a distributed demonstration system which connects together all the important 3-dimensional NDT methods in Europe, to comprise a new 3-dimensional NDT test system. This should meet the important requirement for the availability of 3-dimensional NDT data sets on demand to users of network services.Key issues in the research are:the definition and use of a general standard data format for 3-dimensional NDT data;the establishment of prototypes with enhanced capabilities for communication, combined processing and visualization;on open computer environment for different industrial and country scenarios;remote expertise through a combination of knowledge from different sources and different European locations;remote cooperation by means of online communication between experts;joint viewing, with the help of joint presentation and interpretation of data in an environment, which may be called defect identification by computer assistance (DICA).Technical Approach - Study factors for acceptance of combined 3D NDT, under various aspects.- Implement a system demonstrating a better quality of NDT by combining data sources from different countries.- Install telecommunication links between several test centres to provide remote expertise, remote co-operation and joint viewing with full functionality for visualisation and interpretation at each centre.- Apply the demonstration system to several typical inspection tasks from different industries to encourage user acceptance for combined decentralised test systems.- Standardise data formats and transform co-ordinate systems of 3D-data from different physical test methods.- Validate system and its applications to recommend a range of future 3D-tasks in industry. Key Issues - Define and use a general standard format for 3D NDT data.- Set-up of prototypes with additional capabilities for the communication, combined processing and visualisation.- Open system for various industrial country scenarios.- Combining knowledge through on-line co-operation between experts.- Joint viewing with the help of joint presentation and interpretation of data. Expected Impact This experiment has created an awareness of the benefits of integrating several methods for quality assurance processes by means of telecommunications. Impact was mainly on inspection methods using large amounts of 3D data at geographically separated locations. Major applications are in safety sensitive areas such as the nuclear, transport and aircraft industries. Companies with distributed manufacturing and inspection facilities can also save time and transport expenses through the TRAPPIST platform.
