Advanced Platform Technologies in Tele-working for Underpinning a Decentralised Economy

Objectif

One of the main promises of IBC, and hence of the RACE programme, is that it will remove the geographical constraints on the interaction of people in the European community. APTITUDE looks at the effects that IBC could have on how work is organised and distributed within the community.
The main aim of the research was to investigate the effects of integrated broadband communications (IBC) on how work is organized and distributed within the European community. Additional aims were:
to provide a conceptual foundation for the classification of teleworking and for the analysis of its infrastructure requirements and socioeconomic impact;
to develop and test a generic teleworking platform which meets the needs of a number of diverse applications including accountancy, legal consultancy, market reserach, software engineering, computer aided systems engineering (CASE) consultancy, medical consultancy and technical support.

Work completed in the research has:
identified a rich, detailed set of user requirements for teleworking applications;
produced a powerful teleworking requirements model for the representation and analysis of problems, opportunities, and policy in the application domain;
defined and implemented a core set of teleworking service requirements to support the application pilots;
defined an applications level architecture to support the design of distributed, cooperative applications;
produced a framework for mapping the solution architecture onto communications and information system services and resources.
Technical Approach

APTITUDE will provide a conceptual foundation for the classification of tele-working and for the analysis of its infrastructure requirements and socio-economic impact. Using this analytic framework, the project will develop and trial a generic tele-working platform which meets the needs of a number of diverse applications. These include a range of professional services including accountancy, legal consultancy, market research, software engineering, CASE consultancy, medical consultancy and technical support.

APTITUDE will assess the overall impact of recent technological advances in broadband networks on the nature and feasibility of tele-working, in order to produce a set of validated user requirements for the communications infrastructure and for the corresponding terminal or workstation technology that meets individual and organisational needs.

Key Issues

- Tele-Working.
- Classification.
- Technology development.
- Application experiments.
- Evaluation and promotion.

Expected Impact

Through dissemination of results to the RACE Community and other interested parties the project aimed to:

- Increase awareness of the opportunities presented by teleworking in an IBC environment.
- Encourage and facilitate uptake of new teleworking applications.
