Objective - To innovate, develop and quantify the potential of Advanced TDMA Systems for UMTS radio access.- To compare the potential performance of Advanced TDMA systems with other radio access techniques under consideration within RACE II.- To work with the other RACE II projects, ETSI, and other standardisation bodies to promote a common understanding of UMTS as a complete system and promote the development of the best possible system within standardisation. The overall objective of the research was to contribute to the identification of the most appropriate radio access system for the provision of mobile narrowband service connections to the integrated broadband communications network (IBCN). The research concentrates upon advanced time division multiple access (TDMA) techniques such as an adaptive air interface which automatically adapts to suit different operating environments and service needs. Key issues in the research include:support of services under different operating environments taking into account the needs of multiple operators;the air interface should be flexible enough to support different cell types and to allow high bit rate services;an adaptive air interface with the ability to handle the varying needs of different environments, services and quality;digital communications associates (DCA) and central frequency planning;packet or call reservation;inband or dedicated signalling channels;the degree and response time of power control;the balance between allowable interference and noise;transmission bandwidth;modulation schemes;forward error correction codes;robustness of the speech coder decoder (codec);ARQ;determination of the fair basis of comparison between code division multiple access (CDMA) and TDMA radio access techniques.Technical Approach System evaluation will be performed using both Real-time and Simulation Testbeds. The real-time system demonstrator (testbed) comprising two mobile stations, two radio base stations, a network emulator and a radio channel simulator will be implemented to evaluate the performance of the RF, transport and low level control sub-systems. This testbed will support a limited range of UMTS service demonstrations including advanced video and voice coding technologies. The complementary simulation testbed comprising detailed and global tools will further evaluate radio network control issues and will estimate radio access signalling traffic and the radio access system capacity. Work will be concentrated on: - finalising the Realtime Testbed- extending the services of the Global Simulation Testbed- implementing the Service Demonstrator based on the completed Realtime Testbed- completion the System Performance Evaluation. Key Issues On the basis of the requirements for UMTS as defined by ETSI SMG5, the following are considered to be the key issues of ATDMA: - To complete the implementation and evaluation of the Advanced TDMA radio access system for UMTS.- To continue, in co-operation with other RACE projects a quantitative comparison of Advanced TDMA with other access techniques for UMTS.- To present, to relevant standardisation bodies, the final results and ideas of the project on the use of Advanced TDMA radio access techniques for UMTS.- To complete the implementation of the Realtime Testbed and Simulation Testbeds.- To complete the evaluation of the ATDMA system concept against the requirements of UMTS.- To finalise the documentation of the project's overall ATDMA system concept and to co-ordinate the remaining technical work in the project.- To develop realistic UMTS service demonstrations based on the existing Realtime Testbed.- To further evaluate the Advanced ATDMA system concept through to use of the UMTS service demonstrations. Expected Impact The ATDMA project will maintain Europe's competitive advantage in TDMA mobile systems. The results of the project will be submitted in standards proposals to ETSI, facilitating future standardisation work of the next generation of mobile radio communications systems in Europe.
