MILL BLOOM REHEATING FURNACE CONVERSION TO REGENERATE BURNER FIRING

Ziel

To demonstrate the applicability of regenerative burners to large reheating furnaces in order to realize the potential for additional energy savings from their type of firing compared to the more traditional systems. The project involves the conversion of a natural gas fired steel bloom reheating furnace from conventional hot air burner firing, utilizing an external waste heat recuperator, to regenerator beds.
The projected annual energy savings resulting from the project are 3,136 TOE by reduction of specific energy consumption 24%.
Successful project especially in the field of NOx emissions. The fuel economy was measured at 15.4% against 24% predicted. Potential for further improvement up to 20% has been identified.
An existing walking-beam type furnace, of 135 t/hour nominal capacity and a thermal input of 255 GJ/hour, will be modified. The furnace is top fired at the charge end and top and bottom fired at the discharge and which is water-cooled.
The modification is centered around the replacement of the existing medium velocity burners by regenerative ceramic aburners (RCB), which are designed to provide air preheats normally about 100 deg.C below furnace temperature, i.e. up to 1,200 deg.C exhausting waste gas at 100-200 deg.C. The RCB consists of a compact regenerator coupled to a refractory lined burner which doubles as an exhaust duct. One RCB unit comprises of two regenerators, two burners, a reversing valve and an associated control.
Cold air is preheated by the first regenerator and used by the first burner.
Exhaust gas is drawn through the second burner and associated regenerator, to preheat the packing and then exhausted to atmosphere. When the second regenerator is charged, the process is reversed.
The higher air preheats and lower waste gas temperatures achieved give higher efficiencies and lower fuel requirements, compared to the conventional system.
