ECONOMIC OPTIMIZATION OF THE RUNNING SPEED OF INLAND WATERWAY TRANSPORT

Objetivo

Based on measurement of speed (both with respect to the water and with respect to the shore) and consumption, this project intends to develop a means of calculating the economic optimal speed for the CFNR convoys on the Moselle River, taking into account operating conditions and constraints.
Expected energy savings and payback are respectively 5% (38 TOE/year/pusher-craft) and 3.6 years.
The software was not able to take into account all details of the different sections of the Moselle.
The mathematical model indicated significant data with accuracy on basis of trials. Tests were carried out for two boats.
This system is not able to determine average speed, time spent, and fuel consumption on a journey.
The methodology is based on information regarding speeds, consumption and motor rotation speed introduced in mathematical models, taking into account the hydrodynamic characteristics of the convoy, technical aspects of the propulsion mechanism, navigational conditions and economic data specific to the company effecting the transport. A final model will present the optimal cost/Km as a function of motor rotation speed and the convoy's position on the waterway.
The results will be presented as an operating schedule covering all possible parameters as a function of the type of convoy; loading, direction of travel, water level and delivery requirements.
For a pusher-craft on the Moselle with 2 motors of 670 CV each, 751 TOE is consumed; the goal is to save 5% or 38 TOE/year. Measurement will take place in 3 phases:
a. "in situ" preparation of measurement equipment;
b. prior measurements during a roundtrip voyage Thionville-Koblenz to determine the parameters of the speed and pusher-craft consumption functions to be included in the model;
c. measurement phase after preparation of the mathematical model, with at least 3 trips in each direction under different conditions, in order to standardize the model.
