ENERGY SAVING THROUGH THE USE OF COMMERCIAL ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Objetivo

To demonstrate the cost effectiveness of using electric vehicles for commercial purposes. It is projected that energy consumption will be reduced by 30 % : operational costs should also be reduced. Overall vehicle performance will be acceptable.
The monitoring system was successfully developed by Datacapture Ltd (Hertfordshire - UK) in the first phase of the project. Breakdowns became common and most often servicing was required for acid spillage, fuse breakdowns, heating system problems, braking and acceleration problems, and also with the sensors and transmission.
Energy results:
Average energy consumption was 0,9 kWh/km instead of the expected 0,73 kW/Km.
Improvements are necessary before electrical fleets can be used in urban traffic.
Eight light-weight electric trucks were tested, four being Dodge 50 models manufactured by Talbot (IR), weighing 6.6 tons equipped with conventional Chloride batteries (Pb) with a maximum speed of 65 km/h. The others are IVECO manufactured Fiat Daily 35 F8 models, weighing 3.8 tons equipped with Marelli tubular conventional batteries (Pb) and a maximum speed of 65 km/h.
The vehicles were driven under typical city traffic conditions. They were used for testing of installations, meter replacement programme and multi-stop goods delivery, carrying loads of 800-2,500 kg.
Data for evaluation was collected over a 3 year period, including electricity consumption, distance, battery temperature, load, heater fuel use, acid gravity, ambient temperature, journey profiles and maintenance costs. Driving conditions were also analysed with respect to battery, mechanical or electrical failures and driver behaviour training requirements.
Idle time was inacceptable compared with conventional fleets.
