ANTI-CORROSIVE TREATMENT ON THE INSIDE SURFACE OF PIPES

Obiettivo

In order to fight against corrosion on the inside surface of steel pipes and to avoid the deterioration of the liquid being transported, a protective coating is compulsory.
The most common method used at present, hot galvanizing, requires significant quantities of energy in order to melt the zinc and keep it at a temperature of 550 deg.C.
The protective coating provided by this method lasts only for a short time when used in a marine environment or in industrial installations.
Our innovative process, called "TRANS-TURNBO-AIR" (T.T.A.) enables the application, on the inside surface, of a protective film adapted to the fluid conveyed, completely inert to stray electric current. The advantage of this process is that it uses very little energy (applied cold), and the easy handling of the equipment needed for application allows important gains in both transport costs and in time (handling operations).

We have elaborated and built machines designed for industrial use as was the initial aim of the project based on our previous research work.
With these machines we are able to treat the inside surface of prefabricated pipes (elbows, branch pipes) which have a diameter between 40 and 200 mm and are up to 6 metres long.
When put into operation, the measurement and tests all proved satisfactory.
Using a very efficient and specifically adapted product, we began by preparing the surface:
removing rust and grease, surface cleaning and phosphating in one single operation and in a minimum of time.
We then applied a protective coating derived form epoxy resins, inert to corrosive agents and to stray electrtic current. The range of products to be found on the market is sufficient to enable us to adapt the coating to the fluid conveyed.
Our process replaces advantageously the hot galvanizing method. Energy costs are reduced by 210 KWh/ton and production costs by 50 %.
A European patent covering this process has been registered under n. 96430009.0.2311 on 15th April 1986.
Mobile equipment, reduced working surface, can be manipulated by non-specialized workers on urban or industrial sites.
Enormous marketing possibilities.
We are looking for European partners for distribution and marketing of this innovating process.
REFERENCES AND PUBLICATIONS :
An article on the TRANS-TURBO-AIR was published in the French magazine "INDUSTRIE ET TECHNIQUE" of 1st May 1988, a report was given on national television channels FR3 and TF1 and was exhibited at the Innovation Fair SITEF in September 1987 in Toulouse (France).
Based on our prototype and the know-how acquired during our research work and the perfecting of the process, the project consists of:
- developing, building and testing in conditions of intensive use, machines adapted to industrial requirements (easy handling, efficiency, robustness) and complying to security specifications. - acquiring a technically and economically reliable process (quality guarantee) whatever the initial state of the surface to be treated or the configuration of the pipe.
- improving and testing the chemical formulae of the cleaning products specially adapted to our process.
- choosing and adapting the coating products to suit the different levels of aggressiveness of the fluids conveyed.
- drawing-up information documents on the utilization of the process and quality guarantees.
