Objetivo Thermal upgrading of a total of 300 dwellings in several apartment buildings (social housing erected in the 50's and the 60's), based upon the heat recovery on exhaust air and gases. Energy savings should reach 0.3 TOE/year/dwelling.During the study phase, several kinds of ducts, insulation and hold-down clips have been selected to form different coherent systems. The heat losses and pressure drops have been calculated. A new kind of hold-down clip had to be settled up during the prototype phase to solve some architectural problem.For the two sites there was no problem for the installation of the external ducts, but the operations of finition need well qualified workers. No difficulties for installing the ventilation equipment on the balconies, but well for the additional electric coils. A lot of troubles has to be solved during the commissioning period of the "double flux" heating/ventilating equipment.A full thermal audit was conducted by the COSTIC for the first site (Bapaume-63 dwellings) : air infiltration (mean value 0,5 ach for mean wind speed of 1 m/s), inside dry bulb temperature and water temperature of the heating circuits (building is overheated), consumption of domestic hot water and gas consumption for the boilers; the heat losses of the building were calculated.The project describes itself as an "alternative to the outside insulation of energy inefficient buildings", trying to solve the problem of air-infiltration control.External insulated ducts are to be added on the facades in order to :- collect exhaust air from dwellings- pre-heat outside fresh air- provide warm fresh air to dwellings.The ducts, made of asbestos-cement are prefabricated and insulated in factory and the assembling on site is cheap and easy.The ducting is an auxiliary heating system which might become the main one (warm air distribution) in case of replacement of the existing boiler plants. Heat losses through ducts should not exceed 1 % of total heat losses.
