SUBSTITUTION OF THE BLAST FURNACE PROCESS BY AN ELECTRO-SMELTING PROCESS

The treatment of complex non-ferrous metalbearing recycling materials by blast furnace smelting shall be substituted by an energy saving and pollution free electro-smelting process.
The total energy consumption will be reduced by more than 50%.
Final report received January 1993. Results disappointing in showing no primary energy saving. There were same cost (energy and operation) and environmental benefits but the payback time of 8-14 years relative to the life of the plant of 10 years is too long.
The planned electro-smelting plant comprises the following :
- Preparation and pretreatment of the feed
- Stationary electric furnace with after burning chamber and off gas cleaning system
- Tiltable forehearth
- Casting equipment for slag and liquid smelting products
The furnace will be operated as an electro reduction furnace with resistance heating of the slag. The furnace is stationary and consists of a round furnace shell. The electro energy is fed into the slag by using prebaked coal electrodes. The furnace is completely sealed against atmosphere by using a gas tight furnace roof, thus minimizing the off gas volume and diffusive emissions.
The electro-smelting process shall supersede the current blast furnace operation characterized by a high specific energy consumption and inevitable emission problems.
