THE SUMMER USE OF THE MEDIUM TEMPERATURE WASTE HEAT OF THE MANTOVA ICIP REFINERY FOR A SPECIAL COOLING PRODUCTION

Objetivo

The project aimed to use the waste heat from IES Oil Refinery in Mantova in summer for cooling purposes. Several tranches of work were foreseen; the first object of this contract was completed, and aimed to use the cool air coming from the absorption plant, to reduce temperature in a section of the refinery process to save propane.
The project had a good result both from a technical and economical point of view. The Monitoring Programme gave the following main results :
a) an electricity consumption of the order of 70./.77 kWh/h
b) a C.O.P. of the cooling plant is the order of 0.40./.0.45
c) a propane quantity saved in the order of 0.4 t/h
d) a specific energy consumption =

waste heat for propane column (TOE/h) = 0.07 = 0.175 TOE

e) an annual amount of energy saved of 3341 TOE/year.
The IES Oil Refinery in Mantova produces about 100 MWth of waste heat at various temperature levels between 40 deg. C and 200 deg. C. About 20 MWth are at a temperature level about 130 deg. C with an average value of 160 deg. C and these are reasonably recoverable whereas the rest will not be used because it would require too many unacceptable modifications to the refinery production process or too high economical investment to justify the economical return.
In winter the good temperature level waste heat is used already in an urban district heating distribution network.
This project aims to use part of the good temperature level waste heat also in summer for cooling purposes. The first user linked to the distribution network is the Refinery itself and other tranches of the project foresee the Hospital, some Banks and Palazzo Te in Mantova.
For this first application 1800 TOE/year is the potentiality of the absorption plant installed in the IES Refinery.
