HIGH TEMPERATURE GEOTHERMAL BRINE TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY [STAGE 1]

Objetivo

To generate electricity and produce mineral salts (glaserite SO4, NA2, K2 and boric acids) from a geothermal brine. This includes the drilling of two wells, C7 and C8, located in different geological locations, and construction of 1 Mw pilot installation for simulation of operational conditions. It is hoped to reach a production of 250 T/h at 180 deg c for each well.
Well C7 is intended to reach the sedimentary flysch based reservoir formation below 1,500 m capped by volcanic rock. Well C8 is to be drilled in the brecciated complex of the Caldera baccano (a volcanic chimney). Injection wells are planned for the less productive wells after simulation, and studies on scaling and corrosion are completely based on experience gained from well CESANO C1.
It is not possible to decide whether results obtained for the Cesano geothermal field as a whole indicate the existence of a single deep reservoir. The interpretation most generally accepted at present is that there are several small reservoirs.
Nevertheless, the good results obtained for wells C1 and C7 (500 t/h at 180-190 deg C) justify the continuation of the electricity generation programme (see contrat GE 0063/81/IT).
Well C7 was drilled to a depth of 2,053 m between December 1979 and April 1980. Characteristics of reservoir in Lias Limestone formations at about 2,000 (9 5/8" casing cemented down to 1,959 m mark) are: temperature -221 deg C; salinity - 70 g/l; maximum flow-rate - 600 t/h and operation flow-rate after stabilisation - 250 t/h at 190 deg C.
The well C8 was drilled down to 960 m in volcanic cemented brecciated formations in June and July 1980. At 960 m there occured a strong influx of gas (130 kg/cm2) preventing any attempt to deepen the well or make a complete investigation of the reservoir: this produces a fluid at 155 deg C with a salinity of 370 g/l and a flow rate estimated at 50 and 90 m3/h. Only well C7 is currently exploitable, (3 MW by double flashing). Well C8 cannot be exploited because of the excessively high fluid salinity. Well C1 is producing at a flow-rate of 200 t/h and 180 deg C but cannot be coupled with C7 since this is too far away. A second productive well will have to be drilled as a pair to C7 in order to guarantee production of the 500 t/h required to supply the 8 Mw double flashing unit planned for the site. Well C13 was drilled close to C7 with this in mind but turned out to be unproductive.
