UTILIZATION OF LOW ENTHALPY GEOTHERMAL RESOURCES FOR TWO HOSPITALS IN LISBON

Obiettivo

To demonstrate that cretaceous reservoir can support significant exploitation of geothermal water. The reservoir to be explored lies between 500 and 1500 m depth according to the geological conditions. Producing limestones and sandstones impose screens and gravel pack in the wells but the expected low salinity of the water (0,5 grl) do not require reinjection. Two single wells to be drilled will ensure for 2 different hospitals 80 % of sanitary hot water without heavy changes in distribution network. Well expected productivity is 25 to 35 m3/h with 150 m drawdown and well head temperature of 35 to 50 deg. C. The wells will provide excellent evaluation of cretaceous formation.

Cretaceous Reservoir in the Lusitanian Basin is not yet explored in Lisbon Region where it could be reached at depths ranging from 500 to 1500 m according to the local geomorphological and tectonical features. The available data from existing exploration oils wells and hydrogeological parameters obtained from two water wells recommend to drill two wells at strategic locations. Fortunately, these locations are compatible with direct application of geothermal energy in two Hospitals at this demonstration stage. Hot springs (35 deg. C) are known in the region. Maximum depth for the three wells is 1500 meters.
It is expected a maximum flow rate well up to 36 m3/h with temperatures up to 50 deg. C at well head and a corresponding transmissivity up to 30 Dm. The piezometric level is supposed to be near ground level. Water salinity is expected not to exceed 0,5 g/l.
The geothermal fluid will be directly pumped to the existing distribution systems, avoiding the need of extensive civil works.
To demonstrate that the exploitation of the geothermal resource for an extensive and viable operation can be undertaken we propose :
a) Running production tests of each well and of the aquifer after completion of the wells to set hydrogeological parameters.
b) Monitoring of the exploitation for two years to demonstrate the viability of the reservoir for long term operation. Production, wellhead temperature and piezometric charge will be controlled.
c) Study on the environmental impact.
The physical and chemical characteristics of the fluid, its bacteriological properties and the fiability of the new hot tap water system will be tested.
The well to be drilled in Sta Maria Hospital will be transfered to Egas Moniz Hospital, also in Lisbon. Technical details will be submitted nearly.
