RENOVATION OF ABANDONED MICROHYDRO IN PARALLEL WITH THREE LOCKS AT SOTO ALBUREZ

Cel

To refurbish abandoned civil engineering works at an old disused hydroelectric power station. In addition to renovating all existing civil works some new measures have been undertaken especially at the intake section.
Electromechanical equipments replaced by modern units and the electricity generated sold to the Electricity Supply Authority. The power station operate automatically and have remote control.
The project was submitted to very stringent environmental constraints, specifically concerning visual impact, due to the fact that the canal itself is an historic monument. The project includes a new intake with a fine bar screen and a mechanical raker that can be manually operated, or automatically operated either by a timer or by a pressure differential sensor that defects the degree of saturation on the track to initiate the screen cleaning.
The entirely buried concrete penstock 82 m long and 1.30 m diameter has been reused after reinforcing certain sections and ensuring the leakproof of the joints. The turbine is a vertical single regulated Kaplan, permitting the direct coupling with the generator, and placed into a 90 degrees elbow, avoiding the much more expensive spiral housing. The optimum efficiency of the turbine is 90.06% at a flow of 3.689 m3/and a net head of 11.52 m. The maximum output corresponds to a flow of 5.128 m3/s and a net head of 11.16 m (457.3 kW). The turbine efficiency with this flow and heads is 82.39%. The estimated annual production is of 2.001 MWh.
The control system includes a piezoelectric sensor whose signal, conveniently amplified, is processed by an oil pressure governor where the signal is then modified by proportional integral actions, and a hydraulic pressure supply system to adjust the angle of the runner blades. The turbine starts once the water in the intake reaches a certain level. In normal operation the hydraulic central adjust the runner blades according to the piezoelectric sensor output. When the level in the intake decreases below a certain and predetermined value, the PLC proceeds to the orderly shutdown of the plant, closing the distributor before disconnecting the generator from the grid to avoid the runaway speed of the rotor.
The project proved that an small hydro plant located on a multipurpose canal is feasible.
The project has proven that even an area considered as very sensible in terms of visual impact can be integrated a small hydro plant provided it has been carefully designed.
An unmanned small hydro plant is nowadays feasible and reliable, reducing the annual operating costs at approximately 2% of its capital cost.
The project intended to demonstrate the viability of refurbishing an old abandoned hydroelectric power plant, located on a multipurpose canal (Canal de Castilla). The project has been designed to take advantage of the head produced by three locks on the canal (12.16 m). The canal, an historical monument, is used for irrigation, urban water abduction, and fluvial transportation. Although the actual flow was at the time 1.98 m3/s. the turbine, a single regulated Kaplan, was designed for a rate flow of 4 m3/s. and an operating range going from 1.8 m3/s up to 5.39 m3/s. The nominal power of the turbine is 461 kW. The rotational speed - 500 rpm - permit a direct coupling with the generator, eliminating the need for a gearbox, reducing cost and increasing efficiency.
