EVALUATION OF LITHOLOGIC PARAMETERS IN HYDROCARBON RESERVOIR BY SIMULTANEOUS APPLICATION OF COMPRESSION AND SHEAR WAVES

Objetivo

Exploration efforts are recently more and more directed to hydrocarbon reservoirs of the "faziell type". Reservoirs of this type are indicated by a lateral change in the pay zone lithology independent of geological structures.
For the exploration of those reservoirs - e.g. in South Germany - it is necessary to obtain the total information of seismic data.
Bedsides the travel times of seismic waves, the amplitudes of the reflexions are important in the above mentioned sence.
At this background, a project LIPS is scheduled to investigate the potential of comprehensive analysis of seismic data (p and s) in "seismic lithology".
Interesting results are obtained in different parts of the project :
- modelling of thin and outcropping layers
- comparison of reflectivity and finite difference models
- approximation techniques for calculating reflection coefficients
- improvements of PS-processing and of signal-noise ratio
- development of a elastic model for borehole interface waves
- theoretical and experimental investigations of amplitudes and phases of p- and s-waves.
The results have to be verified and completed till the end of the project. A final syntesis of the results is planned to give more insight into the possibilities to evaluate lithologic parameters in hydrocarbon reservoirs by simultaneous application of compression and shear waves.
The project is scheduled as joint venture in cooperation with three university institutes and eight oil companies. It includes theoretical work, experiments and field investigations.
The main goal is the analysis, further development and combination of methods for the evaluation of lithologic parameters of hydrocarbon reservoirs.
One of the prerequisites for the application of lithoseismic methods and for the involvation into exploration programs is a comprehensive data base, especially of those reservoirs with lithologic transitions.
The quality of registrations and the availability of both p- and s- waves are the main criteria for the selection of test reservoirs.
It is planned to analyse selected seismograms in detail besides the installation of full sections.
A special objective is the relation between amplitude behaviour of the reflection and its angle of incidence.
In addition to the seismic registrations, well-based observations by means of logs and VSP are planned. Wellbore waves like the "Stoneley wave" are to be investigated on their potential for density and permeability evaluations. Laboratory investigations on rock materials are directed to obtain correlations between seismic and petrophysical parameters.
The main technical goals are summarized as follows:
- evaluation of reservoir parameters by the combined use of different types of seismic waves (p-, s- and Stoneley waves)
- optimization of the analysing methods by wavelet processing with concern to the reflection amplitudes and phases
- interrelation of logging- and VSP -parameter with seismic data along surface related profiles
- further improvement of the generation, application and interpretation of shear waves.
