Objective The research objective is to obtain the reservoir rock properties via "sonic log" measurements in the borehole. The project aims at the development of an improved interpretation technique for acoustic recordings. Acoustic measurements will be performed under atmospheric and under high pressure/temperature conditions in the laboratory on both artificial and natural (outcrop) rock samples. The improved interpretation procedure should make it possible to determine permeability, lithology, rock strength and types of porosity from the acoustic measurement in the borehole. The laboratory results will be applied to acoustic field recordings.A. Production artificial rocksSamples were cut from the artificial blocks for the petrophysical measurements.b. Taking outcrop samplesAfter small samples from Bentheim were analysed, sandstone blocks were selected for high P/T measurements.c. Modification atm. systemAn additional rotation for the transducer in the horizontal plane was added.d. Atm. measurementsGeneral petrophysical and acoustic transmission measurements were performed on the artificial rock and the Bentheim sandstone.e. Modification high P/T systemThe operational procedure for performing experiments was simplified and the system is now operational.f. High P/T measurementsHigh P/T measurements can now be performed on a routine basis.g. Evaluation procedureWork performed on comparing models describing wave propagation in porous media with a new model proposal was presented at the EAEG in Florence. Measurements performed on artificial reservoir rocks were evaluated.h. Field applicationsThe data from anarray sonic tool in an offshore gas well, donated by an oil company were evaluated. The procedure aims at the investigation of the effect on acoustic response of the change in one reservoir property while all other properties remain constant. A general interpretation technique will be derived from this.a. Production artificial rocksProduction of artificial rock in the laboratory and changing the following properties: lithology, volume of cement binding the grains, grainsize, porosity and sorting.b. Taking outcrop samplesTake "outcrop" samples in the field and vary the following properties within limits: lithology, cement, grainsize, porosity, and sorting. The samples have to be taken in quarries. On small samples the reservoir properties will be measured after which the bigger blocks can be selected.c. Modification atm. systemModify the atmospheric measurement system. The objective is to increase the flexibility in measuring configurations and varying geometries of the rock.d. Atm. measurementsMeasure acoustic properties on the samples at atmospheric conditions. The measurements can be performed on a flat surface and a borehole cylindrical surface with varying distances.e. Modification high P/T systemModification of the high pressure, temperature reactor to make it possible to measure displacements in horizontal and vertical directions. Making the heating mechanism more effective and less damaging for the samples. Adjusting the transducers configuration.f. High P/T measurementsMeasure acoustic properties on the samples at high pressure and temperature. The samples will have a maximum height of 0. 6 m and diameter of 0. 4 m. The temperature and pressure range should represent the in-situ circumstances down to 4000 m depth.g. Evaluation procedureDevelopment of an interpretation technique to obtain the reservoir properties from the acoustic recording in the laboratory using experiment and theory.h. Field applicationsApply the developed evaluation procedure to the field logs and check the results with the core measurement results available for those wells. The acoustic field recording of several wells are in our possession.
